Snowmaking is going great and we only need one more night to put the finishing touches on Upper Dobie and Potato Patch.  If all goes well overnight tonight we should be skiing and riding on 2 trails and operating 2 lifts from 12 noon to 5pm tomorrow.  Please check this blog tomorrow morning for the final decision.

Snowmaking Resumes Tonight!

Winter returns later today and hangs around until Sunday morning.  We plan to take advantage of this brief period of cold and try very hard to get the ski area open, if only for a few days.  What we are able to accomplish will depend on how cold it gets and how long it stays cold.  Cross your fingers for no temperature inversions, light winds and some good luck.

If the weather cooperates, we would like to open limited terrain on Sunday and operate from 12 noon until 5pm.  Because the snowmaking hours available are limited, the amount of snow made will not survive the extended warm up in our forecast.  Rather than focus on this reality, we are going to do everything we can to get open even if we only operate for a few days.  We love snow as much as anyone else and a few days of fun on the snow are worth all the effort we are going to put in.

Our snowmaking focus will be on Upper Dobie to Loggers Alley Lift, Potato Patch, Ridgely’s Fun Park and The Plunge.  2 trails, 2 lifts, a few rail features on Upper Dobie, kid fun in Ridgelys and a few lanes of tubing.  In an effort to try and make this happen, we have placed ground guns between tower guns trying to maximize our production in this limited area.  With the short weather window, this strategy provides the best chance at getting something to slide on.  Success has everything to do with weather….Cross your fingers and toes for COLD!

For those of you wanting to visit, please look at the Mountain Message Blog BEFORE you head this way.  Making the opening decision on Sunday will depend on how much snow is produced between start up later today and shutdown Sunday morning.  The “go” or “no go” decision will be communicated on the Mountain Message Blog no later than 8am Sunday and will include the regular slopes open details.  Operating Monday and beyond will depend on how warm it gets and how long our snow can hang on.  Please check the Mountain Message Blog before you head our way.

Snowmaking Resumes on Friday!

Cold is coming! The forecast suggests we will be able to begin making snow again late in the afternoon on Friday, and we plan to keep making snow over the weekend. We are ready to turn this place WHITE!

Snowmaking depends on a lot of factors. One that we watch is the “wet bulb” temperature, which is a mathematical function of the dry bulb (ambient) temperature and the level of humidity. Due to the complicated relationship between temperature and humidity, it’s actually possible to make snow at temperatures above freezing. Likewise, on a humid day, it may not be possible to make snow even though the thermometer indicates that it’s below freezing. So do your snow dances for cold temps and low humidity!

Opening day remains too difficult to predict, but look for another update on Friday.

Waiting For Winter

Winter has yet to arrive on the East Coast, with temps forecasted this weekend to be more like early Fall than mid-December. Eventually, Old Man Winter will arrive and when he does, we will be ready.

The extended forecast suggests snowmaking temperatures return the later part of next week. When cold temps return, we will restart our snowmaking system and resume efforts to get open. Predicting opening day remains impossible at this point. Please keep checking this blog for updates and ask Santa for COLD temperatures!

Even without snow, Wintergreen is a great place for memorable experiences. Until we have something to slide on, come visit our Spa, play golf in Stoney Creek, play tennis at Devils Knob, enjoy a great meal or go hiking around our beautiful mountain. We will also have restaurants available as well as The Market and The General Store. Further afield, area attractions in Nelson County offer wine and brew tastings, antique shops, historic sites and more.

Waiting for Cold

Fighting Mother Nature is not an easy thing to do. We started snowmaking last Thursday night, and since then we’ve had inversions every night, robbing us of the low temps we’re looking for and preventing snowmaking.

The good news is that we’re ready. We’ve had the entire SNOWPOWER system running, made our yearly repairs and fine-tuned everything. The system is in great shape, our snowmakers are standing by, and we are itching to turn on the guns.

Rest assured: as soon as temps allow, we will make snow.

We know we won’t make our previously scheduled opening date of December 12th. For those wanting a prediction on opening day, doing so is impossible at this time. Once snowmaking temps return, predicting an opening day becomes a little easier to do. Until then, please check this blog regularly for updates. We hope to know more later on in the week. Thanks for your support and understanding.

Rotten Luck

The weekend ended with a 3rd inversion overnight last night.  Temps held at 39 on the mountain while the valley areas ended up bottoming out at 28 degrees.  Tough luck, requiring our continued patience.

Temps will turn milder this week making snowmaking very unlikely.  The next shot at snowmaking weather appears to be after the upcoming weekend.  While we hate to miss our opening previously scheduled for Saturday December 12th, you can rest assured that we are ready and waiting.  As soon as the weather cooperates we will be making snow.  For those wanting a prediction on opening day, doing so is impossible at this time.  Once snowmaking temps return, predicting an opening day becomes a little easier to do.  Until then, please check this blog regularly for updates.

When colder air arrives our snowmaking strategy will include the opening of slopes and tubing.  Last Thursday night's focus included making snow on Eagles Swoop, The Plunge, both Cross Trails, Upper and Lower Dobie, Potato Patch and the upper portion of our Terrain Park exiting near the Park Shack.  This strategy might change some when we see what the next snowmaking forecast looks like, however, our focus will continue to include skiing, tubing and an area for some smaller park features.   If the snowmaking weather window is small, we might narrow our strategy and concentrate fire power.  Example - give up Lower Dobie and use this capacity to increase our chances of getting slopes listed above open.  We study the weather and use the data to predict system output and the likely results of our work...  Ultimately the weather will determine both opening day and what we have to slide on.

Next update later this week.  Thanks for your support and understanding.

Another Inversion

Another big inversion overnight put a stop to our grand snowmaking plan...  Temps up at the resort only reached a low of 42 while the valley dropped to 28 degrees.  Our original forecast assumed a low of around 26 on the mountain.  OUCH.  We will have a crew in again tonight, ready to make snow if temps allow.  Cross your fingers and toes!

Temperature Inversion

We were unable to make snow overnight, temps inverted on us resulting in a low of 38 up here and 25 in the valley.  Rather than go into a lot of detail, inversions result in a warm layer being "trapped" at our elevation.  This usually happens when our weather pattern is switching from cold to warm.  We often invert on the last day of a snowmaking run as the milder weather heading our way slips in aloft the night before it is expected.  Our staff will be on the job again tonight in hopes that we have better luck.

WHITE is the greatest color of all!

Winter returned yesterday providing an opportunity to make snow overnight.  YES!  We like everything about making snow.  The noise, the excitement, how the snow squeaks under your boots and of course, the color!

Temps will bounce around over the next several days providing for some additional snowmaking during the overnight hours.  When Mother Nature allows, we will be making snow!

As much as we hate to say it, the weather over the next week is going to keep us from opening on the 12th of December as we originally planned.  Opening depends entirely on the weather and the current weather is forcing all of us snow lovers to be patient. Building up enough base snow to slide on takes cold temps and time.

The best way to keep up with our snowmaking progress, opening day announcements and other things happening at the resort is to check this Mountain Message Blog regularly.  As things happen, we will provide updates.  Cross your fingers and toes for cold weather and enjoy these pics taken overnight and early this AM.

Happy Thanksgiving from Wintergreen Resort

This year I thought I would share my top five reasons why I’m thankful.

  1. I live and work in a stunning place. I say it again and again, but I'm truly thankful for the opportunity to work in such a beautiful part of this world. I never tire of coming up the mountain.
  2. I work with a team that can’t be beat. Wintergreen has a dedicated staff that excels in making a difference to our members and guests. They are smart, hard-working, creative and just plain fun. Again, I never tire of coming up the mountain.
  3. We have a bright future. This past February we were purchased and the new owners have been supportive and have exciting ideas for our future. As plans develop, we’ll keep you informed.
  4. We have loyal members, property owners, day visitors and overnight guests who love Wintergreen. We thank you for your support - you are our best ambassadors.
  5. Winter is here! Each season at Wintergreen is unique, but winter is the most exciting with cold crisp air, cozy fires, blue bird skies, starry nights and the best skiing, riding and tubing!

We look forward to welcoming you back to Wintergreen. May this holiday season bring you joy and a thankful heart. We wish you a Happy Thanksgiving.

Sincerely,

Hank Signature - smaller

Snowmaking Tests

Some of you may have noticed the first flakes falling on our slopes last night. But it wasn’t the return of SNOWPOWER just yet – we were testing the system and doing maintenance to make sure everything is ready. Check out the pictures below for a look behind the scenes with one of our snowmakers!

Last night and this morning we’ve been doing our big air test. This test involves pressurizing the underground air pipe network looking for leaks and exercising equipment that has sat dormant since March.  Once this test is complete, we will spend the rest of the day making repairs, making adjustments and with a little luck fist-bumping another thing off our list.

Now all we need is a little help from Mother Nature!

Since we had the snowguns pumping, we decided to leave them on as long as possible so that our Thanksgiving guests would have some bonus snow to play in!

Then, tomorrow is a full day of fun. Discovery Ridge is open, and there's an Open House at The Spa. Complimentary wellness classes, chair massages, and free samples are among the treats you'll find there. You'll also want to head over to our famous Spooktacular Workshop where you can make your own trick or treat bag, carve a pumpkin, decorate cookies, and make crafts like spider and ghost lollipops, spider "stained glass," and ghost lanterns. There's also Resort Trick or Treating with prizes awarded for best costume, most creative costume and creepiest costume. And we'll have a Peep Roast (a Wintergreen Tradition!) and the Family Movie on The Big Screen will be Hotel Transylvania. And if you're not exhausted after that, head over to The Edge to hear some live music at 9 pm. We've got Greg Ward bringing Reggae and Roots Rock to the stage!

On Sunday, make the most of your weekend by attending the Bluegrass Brunch at Stoney Creek Bar & Grill. Jan Smith & The Honeybirds will be offering up some traditional Appalachian bluegrass music with a gospel-inspired spin! When Is Peak?

The phones have been ringing off the hook with curious leaf peepers wanting the inside word on when peak color will arrive.

The answer is: we don't know!

Only Mother Nature herself knows when peak will be, but we think it's getting pretty close right now. Fall Foliage Report

It's official: fall color has begun! Yellows and oranges are beginning to appear, although a good amount of trees are still holding onto green. But when will peak be? It's hard to say because it depends on the weather, and it depends on your definition of peak. But, we do know for sure that color has already begun, and usually continues into November, so make plans to see the Blue Ridge turn to gold.

From The Virginia Department of Forestry report from October 7:

Despite last week's heavy rains, the forest color palette is beginning to change this week in the higher mountain areas. At high elevations in southwest Virginia and along the Blue Ridge Parkway, yellow patches are most obvious, dominated by early sugar maples, hickories, black birch, and yellow-poplar. The upper elevations of Shenandoah Valley are also showing patches of yellow. All over the mountains, reds can be seen in early changers like Virginia creeper, dogwood, and black gum. Check out this under-appreciated species along roadsides, where it can be identified at a distance by its branching pattern, at right angles to the trunk. Meanwhile, shades of green will predominate for awhile in central and eastern Virginia.

In general, trees with greater exposure in any location are among the earliest changers and may even lose their leaves early if the weather is rainy or windy. But don’t worry, the show is just getting started, and there are still billions of leaves left to change! The last few sunny days will be especially helpful in developing the red and orange colors.

Upcoming Events

There are so many ways to enjoy the fall color, from hiking, dining, playing golf and tennis, or putting your feet up at the Spa or on your deck. But we've also got some upcoming events that you won't want to miss:

Midweek Magic

But fall color doesn't get any less spectacular if you visit midweek, plus a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway is less crowded! We've got a number of other great reasons not to wait for the weekend:

SNOWPOWER®

Remember this video from last year? We're getting ready to do it all over again. We can go from zero to 8000 gallons of water per minute faster than anyone else. When we turn on, we lay down great snow, fast. Our complex system involves approximately 40,000 linear feet of pipeline, more than 400 snowguns and 45 weather stations. The result is gold-standard snowsports surfaces, with a uniformity of depth and consistency of snow quality from the top of the slopes to the bottom. Theoretically with optimal conditions, Wintergreen Resort’s snowmaking system could cover a football field with 37 feet of snow in just 24 hours.

So buy your Season Pass now and start dreaming of snow!
