SNOWPOWER Returns for Christmas!

Temps are dropping and Santa is coming. We're all getting an amazing Christmas present this year - SNOWPOWER returns tonight to refresh the surfaces and work on The Highlands and Lower Diamond!

  • 10 trails open for skiing and riding
  • 18"+ snow base
  • Tubing - open with 10 lanes. Please buy tickets in advance - we always sell out.
  • Ridgely's Fun Park - open and ready for snow fun
  • Treehouse Kids Ski Programs - open daily

Santa on The Slopes

When we said temps are dropping and Santa is coming, we meant that literally. Before Santa embarks on his yearly trip around the globe, he'll make a special stop on our slopes. Today, December 24, from 12-2 pm, Jolly Old St Nick will be cruising around the slopes with Christmas cheer and candy!

Snow Forecast

With snowmaking returning tonight, we'll be working hard to open The Highlands as soon as possible. There's even the possibility for some natural snow tonight. We don't expect much accumulation, but even flurries are a great way to celebrate Christmas. Looking farther ahead in the forecast, there's the possibility for up to 5" of snow on Friday. That means we could have POWDER next weekend!

Merry Christmas, everyone! Wishing you all the joy, hope and MAGIC of the season! Check out this timelapse video from the first few days of snowmaking this season.

Awesome Opening Weekend!

Thanks to everyone who came out this weekend, it was a phenomenal opening weekend with lots of smiling faces! We opened with 7 trails and by the second day we were already at 10 trails. Conditions were cold and dry, resulting in a surface that was a joy to ski, ride and tube on. We’re open daily for more snow fun – come and get it!

We’ll see temps that are a bit warmer this week, but our deep base of 20”-30” won’t go away fast. Even if you don’t have snow in your backyard, don’t worry – we do! We’ve built up a lot of snow, so this week you’ll be able to enjoy it with temps that are above freezing. Shed a layer and enjoy great early season conditions.

Tubing will be closed today and tomorrow (Monday-Tuesday) to rebuild for the holiday. Tubing will open for more tubular fun on Wednesday. If you’re planning to tube, please buy tickets in advance as it is very likely that we will sell out. Tickets are available for purchase starting on Sundays for the following week.

SNOWPOWER

We have some chances for snowmaking during the next week, and rest assured, we will be ready to go at every opportunity. Colder weather will be back before you know it and we’ll get back to pumping out the white stuff.

SNOWPOWER Returns

Last night we fired up SNOWPOWER at 6:43 pm and have been pumping snow onto the slopes ever since! We’re lucky to have a great snowmaking forecast for the foreseeable future: freezing or near-freezing temps both day and night. Rest assured, we will be making snow at every possible opportunity! Our snowmakers are the best. Lots of people think of SNOWPOWER as just the snowmaking system, but it’s also the people. Snowmakers, mechanics, everyone who helps us get ready for the busy winter season, all of our friends, family and fans who come enjoy the snow – they’re all a big part of SNOWPOWER. Go SNOWPOWER, Go!

Opening Day

The big announcement is: projected opening day is December 15!

We are focusing on laying down a quality base on our core slopes and making sure that we have a strong opening with great conditions. How many slopes does that mean? We’re not sure yet, but we’ll keep you up to date on this blog and on social media. Do you follow us on Facebook? We posted several live videos last night of the beginning of snowmaking. Look for more awesome updates like that in the future!

What about Tubing and The Highlands?

This year we asked Santa to bring lots of great skiing, riding, and tubing for Christmas, and we think we made his “Nice” list!

After we open with core slopes, we hope to open tubing the weekend before Christmas, and we hope to open The Highlands during the Christmas holiday period.

So wax up your skis and boards and get ready to slide – the time is coming soon!

BRING. IT. ON!

First Snow!

Hiking Trails for Fall Color!

There are over 30 miles of marked hiking trails at Wintergreen. With that much ground to cover, which are the best for viewing fall color? Once again, we went to our nature guru, Josh Palumbo from The Nature Foundation at Wintergreen. Here is his advice and top picks!

Wintergreen is a wonderful venue to optimize your fall color viewing pleasure. When seeking the right trail for great fall color the key is location, location, location. You want trails that have a great diversity of tree species, especially those with vibrant fall foliage. The ideal trail is heavy with maples, black gum, sassafras and hickory. Luckily, Wintergreen has many miles of trails with just those requirements.

Hemlock Springs Trail: This trail, following beside cool, crisp Hemlock Springs, is laden with sugar maple groves which offer some of the best orange and red color fall can offer. As you proceed down this moderate trail, you will see the wonderful reds from the black gum along with the yellow added in from the hickories and yellow poplars.

Upper Shamokin Gorge Trail: This more difficult trail parallels beautiful Stoney Creek which creates a much cooler microclimate perfect for growing a high volume of sugar maple. This trail is also loaded with birch and red maple which provide a good contrast in colors. This trail is a must see for the adventurous color seeker.

Old Appalachian Trail (Cedar Dr – Laurel Springs Dr.): This picturesque portion of trail traverses Wintergreen’s western ridge, which creates a great backdrop for fall colors. Trails with western aspect are usually richer, moister sites. At Wintergreen that means a richer canopy selection. This trail is covered in maple, birch and hickory which make for a lovely color palate. This western ridge is also home to many rock outcrops which offer expansive views of the Shenandoah Valley and therefore a great place to watch color change at landscape level.

Fall Foliage Forecast From The Nature Foundation

Fall foliage is hard to predict, so we've gone to our nature guru for some inside information. Josh Palumbo from The Nature Foundation at Wintergreen has given us the scoop.

Fall Foliage Forecast

This growing season has been a Jekyll and Hyde scenario. Spring was wonderful at Wintergreen; from April-June, the resort received tremendous amounts of precipitation and very moderate temperatures. From July-September we suffered moderate drought conditions. Drought causes stress to trees, and many trees react by ceasing chlorophyll production very early and just dropping their leaves. But, dry weather can also effect fall color positively. Ideal fall color comes from cool nights and calm, sunny days. We have had plenty of those conditions throughout September.

The primary question is what will these opposing factors mean for our fall foliage forecast at Wintergreen?

I believe we are set up for a muted but elongated period of prime colors. Many of the most colorful trees have started dropping their leaves already. On the other hand, a vast majority of trees have been showing a slow change into their fall color “attire." I am guessing we will have a large peak window around October 18-25. That also depends on your definition of peak. Do you prefer the early change when some leaves are colored and others are still green, or do you prefer when most leaves have changed but more leaves may be down? Elevation changes in the area further complicate the topic - later in the season you'll still be able to view vibrant color at lower elevations and in the valley. Whenever you visit, just make sure you get out and enjoy it!

Fall is Calling You!

Do you hear it? The rustle of brightly colored leaves you hear is fall calling you to come to the mountains! There is no better place than Wintergreen Resort and the surrounding area to see the Blue Ridge's annual majestic show of fiery fall color.

Our Favorite Ways to See Fall:

From The Air

For a Saturday thrill, take in the mountain's color from The Zip as you soar 900 feet at speeds approaching 40 mph.
For a more relaxing experience, try a chairlift ride. Come see us October 7-8 during Columbus Day Weekend for a high-flying leaf-peeping experience you won't forget!

From The Green

Devils Knob Golf Course - Virginia's highest golf course covers some spectacular terrain with unsurpassed views.  Guests famously say, "the only thing better than playing Devils Knob in August is playing Devils Knob in October."

From The Trees

Hiking - With over 30 miles of marked trails for you to explore, the possibilities for spectacular fall views is limitless. Stop by The Nature Foundation at Wintergreen for their recommended hikes.

From a Big Comfy Chair, Wearing a Big Soft Robe

Pumpkin Chai Pampering, Autumn Harvest Facial and Wrap, or a Harvest Manicure while you take in fall color?  The Spa is offering fall-inspired treatments to ensure your leaf-peeping experience is as relaxing as possible.

From The Overlooks

Wintergreen is a great jumping off point for a scenic fall drive. Breathtaking fall foliage views abound on the  Blue Ridge Parkway and beyond!

Our Favorite Scenic Fall Drive

Be dazzled by autumn this year and explore the foliage from the top of the mountain to the valley below. Wintergreen is a great jumping off point for scenic fall drives. Be sure to check the Foliage Report to get an idea how fall color is progressing in the Weekly Fall Foliage Report from the Department of Forestry.

Here is this year’s favorite ride:

Blue Ridge Parkway - Nelson 151 Loop

  1. To The Blue Ridge Parkway
Leaving Wintergreen, at the gatehouse, turn right for the Blue Ridge Parkway. Turn right and go north for 13 miles. Along the way, stop off at Raven’s Roost Overlook with a stunning view of the Shenandoah Valley.
    • Insider Tip: The end of September/early October is prime time for seeing hawks and songbirds migrate south.
  2. Continue to Humpback Rock for a Hike
It's a two mile round trip hike to the top of Humpback Rock - the 360 degree view is worth the uphill climb.
    •   Insider tip: this is one of the most popular hikes in the area, so if you like to hike without a crowd, you may want to consider a midweek trip. And for the early riser, a sunrise hike is a stunning way to start your day.
  3. Continue to Route 250
Take Route 250 East toward Charlottesville. As you drive down Rt. 250, turn right on Route 6 and you’ll find Veritas Vineyards and Winery and Afton Mountain Vineyard.
  4. On to Route 151 with Tastings Aplenty
Continue down Route 6 to Route 151 where you’ll have a choice. Turn left and just up the road is Blue Mountain Brewery - the brews are top notch as is the pizza (the Real Deal is our favorite). If you turn right on Route 151 you can wind your way through the Rockfish valley and tour Cardinal Point, Fly Fox and Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery.
  5. Hit The Trail
Need to stretch those legs? Stop off at the Rockfish Valley Loop Trail. Part of the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail, this path offers recreation and interaction with nature and history.
  6. Be Bold
After your hike, just down the road you’ll find Bold Rock Cidery. Enjoy an afternoon on the deck overlooking the farmland while tasting the light and refreshing hard ciders.
  7. Head Back?
You’re almost home! Turn right on Route 664 and if your car needs a rest before heading up the mountain check out Devils Backbone or the Blue Toad, or save them for another day.

Please enjoy this tour responsibly!

    Calling All Stargazers!

Reclining in a convertible, laying back on a blanket in the grass, or just tilting your head to look up from your balcony or patio - there's something magical about the sight of the vast darkness interrupted by brilliant sparkling stars. No matter how much technology advances or how many mobile devices we have, stargazing never ceases to amaze and inspire.

Skywatching is great at Wintergreen year-round because of our elevation and lack of surrounding light pollution, but in the month of August we have some particularly awe-inspiring celestial events coming up!

    Perseids

The annual Perseid meteor shower, known for being among the brightest of meteor showers runs through August 24, but the peak will be this weekend, August 11 and 12. Typically, about 80 meteors an hour can be seen!

How to watch? Get comfortable (your eyes may need to adjust for as much as 30 minutes) and look in the north-east part of the sky. Bring a sweatshirt and enjoy!

    Solar Eclipse

This one you won't even have to stay up late for! On Monday, August 21, 2017, all of North America will be treated to an eclipse of the sun. Some areas in the path of totality will be treated to a total eclipse of the sun as the moon passes between Earth and the sun. At Wintergreen, we will see about an 80% eclipse in the early afternoon.

How to watch? Never look directly at the sun! Facing away from the sun, watch the shadow projected through a pinhole, or make a pinhole box projector.

    Hot Rates

Don't miss these fabulous skywatching events at one of the best places to view them! Be sure to check out Hot Rates when you book. Plus, we have other great ways to stay. From Bed & Breakfast to Golf and Spa packages, or simply a Buy/Get Special Offer which allows you to stay an extra night or two for free. See all our packages and special offers!

8 Great Reasons To Visit in August

There's plenty of summer left, and 10,000 acres (and beyond) of Blue Ridge to explore at Wintergreen! Here are the top eight reasons to visit us in August.

    8) Local Fruit

Right now, Asian pears are available at Saunders Brothers, and if you've never tasted them, they're like a bite of summer, almost a cross between a watermelon and an apple. Not to be outdone, Dickie Brothers has Nectarines and Gala apples, with more fruit ripening all the time.

    7) The Red, White & Brew Trail

With ten wineries, four breweries, one hard apple cidery, and a new distillery, Nelson County offers lots of choices for a memorable tasting tour on the Red, White & Brew Trail.

    6) Events

There's always a reason to celebrate in August! From The Blue Ridge Mountain Music Fest, to the Summer Concert Series at Humpback Rocks Center, Lockn' Festival, and Starry Nights at Veritas Winery, there's always something exciting going on.

    5) ResortBoards

Our newest activity, Resortboards, is serious fun. Surf the mountain - need we say more?

    4) Highest Golf Course in Virginia

Our lovely Devils Knob golf course is the highest in Virginia, and a haven for golfers who want to stay cool.

    3) Berries & Cream Facial

During the month of August, get 10% off our Berries & Cream Facial at The Spa. Repair the visible signs of aging, plump the skin and return the appearance of elasticity. Your complexion will appear enriched and radiant and your skin will appear healthier.

    2) Water Fun

No Virginia family vacation is complete without some swimming. Choose from our indoor pool, two outdoor pools and Lake Monocan! The lake offers a sandy beach and a wide range of activities both in the water and on the shore. Make sure you try stand up paddle boarding!

    1) Hot Rates

Not only are our temperatures cool -- our rates are too. The earlier you book, the better the rate. If that doesn't work for you, check out our Buy/Get Special Offers and stay an extra night or two on us!

    Feeling hot, hot, hot?

At Wintergreen, we’re not, not, not!

    Here’s how we stay cool:

    1. It’s always cooler at 3800 feet
Wintergreen stays 12 to 15 degrees cooler than Charlottesville and more than 18 degrees lower than experienced on the same day in Richmond, Washington D.C. and Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill. Learn more about Wintergreen Weather.
    2. 10,000 acres of shade – we have lots of trees!
Wintergreen’s cool canopy of deciduous trees helps reduce temperatures and keep you refreshed when the thermometer starts to climb. We’re very shady!
    3. A dip in the pool or the lake
No Virginia family vacation is complete without some swimming! The Aquatics & Fitness Center has an indoor pool open year round and an outdoor pool open Memorial Weekend through Labor Day. Down in the valley, your options include the Stoney Creek Pool or Lake Monocan (open Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day). The lake offers a sandy beach and a wide range of activities both in the water and on the shore.
    4. Enjoy sipping a cool beverage on the deck at Devils Grill following a round of golf or a tennis match
Or stay for lunch or dinner! Devils Grill's elegant contemporary American food features fresh, local, and farm-to-table ingredients. Yum! Check out the menus. Access to Devils Grill is limited to registered Wintergreen Resort guests, Wintergreen Members and guests of Members.
    5. A hike to Paul’s Water Slide or to Shamokin Falls
Two of the most beautiful hikes on the mountain and in the valley also have air-conditioning by nature - waterfalls! Check out Upper Shamokin Falls and Paul's Water Slide.
    6. Watching the sun set over the Blue Ridge
There are nearly endless options to enjoy the sunset, both at the resort and on the Blue Ridge Parkway. One of our favorite options on the parkway is just a few miles up the road, Ravens Roost Overlook.
    7. Listening to beautiful music at the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival
Set among the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, you’ll hear classical, jazz, pop, and Broadway, plus there are cooking classes, seminars, and concerts at neighborhood wineries, cideries, and breweries. Going on now through August 6, this year's theme is “The Fountain of Youth.” Learn more about the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival.
    8. Thrills and chills at Discover Ridge Adventure Center including new ResortBoards
Our newest activity at Discovery Ridge will zoom you around the mountain, keep the wind in your hair, and a smile on your face. ResortBoards are off-road personal transportation vehicles. They are a blast to drive - riding on one is like surfing the Earth! Learn more about ResortBoards.
