Holidays at Wintergreen Resort Promise to be Special
WINTERGREEN, Va. (September 20, 2011) – Sure, the kids are back in school and Wintergreen Resort knows it’s never too early to start thinking about the holidays. Besides, those same kids need something to keep them motivated during the first three months of the new school year, and a planned winter trip to this family-favorite destination is hard to top.
Whether it’s Thanksgiving, Christmas or the New Year, Wintergreen Resort, located in the heart of Central Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, is busy making plans to ensure the holidays are extra special for each member of the family. Here’s a closer look:
- Thanksgiving, Nov. 24-27. Traditional feasts, the grand illumination of the courtyard, holiday workshops (gingerbread house, ornament and wreath making), and family movies will be the order of the long weekend. Weather permitting, the Plunge Tubing Park will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday. The annual Ski Swap, which benefits the award-winning Wintergreen Ski Patrol, also is on tap for five hours on Friday (Nov. 25) with a number of great deals on used equipment.
- Christmas & New Year’s, Dec. 23 through Jan. 1, 2012. Activities abound, with cookies to decorate, story readings to enjoy and Mrs. Claus and Santa’s elves to visit, as well as a sack full of winter fun with broomball, ice bowling, juggling and cardboard vehicle races. A Christmas Eve Worship service also is planned, and will be followed by refreshments, and a Candlelight Christmas Eve Buffet in the Copper Mine Bistro. Christmas Dinner and New Year’s Eve celebrations – including a separate party for teens 13-17 – only serve to accent the diverse holiday lineup.
For skiers and snowboarders, Wintergreen offers 26 slopes on 129 skiable acres with two high-speed chairlifts. The resort features the region’s most extensive terrain, with ample slopes for beginners, intermediates and experts alike. Fourteen slopes are lighted for night skiing and the resort’s longest run is 1.4 miles. Two terrain parks and the region’s top snowtubing park add to the winter recreational offerings. Projected opening day for the 2011-12 ski season is Dec. 10. Santa Claus is scheduled to make an appearance on Christmas Eve, handing out candy while swishing down the slopes.
Available for the second consecutive winter season is the property’s outdoor ice skating rink, which proved to be an incredibly popular family activity in its debut year of operation.
Accommodations at Wintergreen Resort are ideal for families as they include 300 villa-style condominiums and rental homes, from studio suites to seven-bedroom homes, each offering a fully equipped kitchen and a comfortable living area, most with fireplaces and a balcony or deck.
