WINTERGREEN FAMILY FUN
GOES BEYOND THE SLOPES
THIS WINTER
WINTERGREEN,
Va. (Nov. 21, 2011) – It’s no secret that Wintergreen Resort, twice named
“Best Ski Resort” by the readers of WashingtonPost.com, is one of the Mid-Atlantic's
premier ski areas and a particular favorite for the family that hits the slopes
as one. But here’s a “Top Secret” nugget for the family whose interests
go beyond skiing or snowboarding: Embrace all the indoor and outdoor fun that
the resort’s Discovery Ridge Adventure Center offers.
Here’s a
closer look at what families can expect to enjoy at Discovery Ridge Adventure
Center:
- The Plunge Snow Tubing Park. Once riders have reached the peak of Virginia’s
largest tubing park, they will have the feel of being on the top of a
10-story building and looking out over a hill that’s longer than three
football fields. Riders can reach speeds of 30 miles per hour, while
tubes can even be hooked together to enhance the family bonding time.
- Ridgely’s Fun Park. Here, guests can play in the snow, while
enjoying a mini-tubing carousel, a gentle hill for tubing, bear paw
snowshoes, tunnels, and a tee-pee for warming up and making s’mores.
- Shamokin Ice.
Located in the heart of the mountain village, the 45 x 90 Shamokin Ice
rink – which debuted last winter – accommodates 60 persons per session and
is conveniently located just off the Blue Ridge Terrace.
- The Zip at Wintergreen. For those who think The Plunge is fast, try
soaring down 900 feet with speeds approaching 40 miles per hour.
It’s not uncommon for each member of the family to be talking about the
ride hours later.
- Indoor Activities. There won’t be any frowns when it’s time to take
things indoors, as the Adventure Center features four Kinect Systems,
eight Xbox 360s, four Nintendo Wiis, a 42-inch plasma television, WiFi
lounge, mechanical bull, foosball table, pool table, air hockey table,
skee ball table, and a theater showing sporting events and videos.
Looking for
more? The Spa, Aquatics and Fitness Center at Wintergreen Resort offers
an indoor, heated swimming pool that is open year-round, as well as a robust
menu of massage, facial and body services.
For those
families or family members who wish to slip in a little skiing or snowboarding,
no problem – Wintergreen Resort offers 26 slopes on 129 skiable acres with two
high-speed chairlifts. The resort features the region’s most extensive terrain,
with ample slopes for beginners, intermediates and experts alike.
Fourteen slopes are lighted for night skiing and the resort’s longest run is
1.4 miles. An array of lessons – including a “Guaranteed Learning to Ski
& Ride program – and rental equipment also are readily available throughout
the winter season.
Accommodations
at Wintergreen Resort are ideal for families as they include 300 villa-style
condominiums and rental homes, from studio suites to seven-bedroom homes, each
offering a fully equipped kitchen and a comfortable living area, most with
fireplaces and a balcony or deck.
