From Mardi Gras to Easter celebrations, there’s something for everyone

WINTERGREEN, Va.  (Feb. 19, 2013) — March Madness isn’t limited to the college basketball courts as Wintergreen Resort, Virginia’s premier Blue Ridge Mountain vacation destination, is unveiling plans for an impressive month-long celebration that will bid adieu to winter, usher in spring and include a weekend-long Easter “egg-stravaganza.”

Here is a closer look:

• Mardi Gras Weekend (Friday, March 1 to Sunday, March 3).  The annual Mardi Gras celebration gets underway Friday and will feature the Wintergreen Slopestyle (part of the winter terrain park series), which is open to skiers and boarders of all ages.  During the weekend, guests will be able to enjoy campfires at Discovery Ridge, with s’more kits available, racing against the clock on the NASTAR course on Saturday and Saturday, opportunities to ride The Zip, and time for the kids to enjoy Ridgely’s Fun Park.

One of the weekend’s highlights comes on Saturday when Wintergreen Adaptive Sports (WAS) holds its annual Mardi Gras event, which will include recognition of students and volunteers, the traditional costume parade, tubing races and a synchronized ski contest.  Of course, the mountain will be open for skiing and riding from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday, while tubing at The Plunge is available as well.  Live entertainment will begin at 9:30 p.m. both Friday and Saturday in The Edge, and DJs will entertain guests on Saturday and Sunday outside Skyline Pavilion.  More information on Saturday’s Mardi Gras celebration is available at

• Spring Fling (Friday, March 8 to Sunday, March 10).  Here’s the opportunity to enjoy great spring skiing and riding, while enjoying plenty of other “Spring Fling” activities, including the fifth and final Rail Jam of the season and NASTAR Eagles Swoop.

• Slide & Splash Bash Weekend (Friday, March to Sunday, March 17).  Wintergreen Resort’s end-of-winter ritual includes music, food, skiing, riding, Terrain Park Party on Saturday, all capped by the annual Pond Skimming Event, which runs 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.  Pond skimming prizes will be awarded for best costume, creativity, distance, style, and crowd participation – a roaring crowd counts for 20 percent of one’s score.

• Easter Weekend (Friday, March to Sunday, March 31).  Wintergreen’s annual “Egg-stravaganza” offers up a full weekend of festivities, including a traditional egg hunt and bonnet parade, craft workshops and egg decorating, and Bunny Hop 5K around the Devils Knob Golf Course.  An Easter morning worship service will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday, while a brunch buffet is available after the Bonnet Parade, Top Hat Parade and Egg Hunt.

Wintergreen Resort offers room rates based on the type of accommodations, ranging from studios to multi-bedroom houses.
