Farewell 2018

Update: 12/31 4:45 pm

Counting Down to 2019

Gather your friends and family and welcome 2019 in an extra special way this year – on the mountain at Wintergreen. Tonight’s highlights include a Glow Stick Parade at 9 pm, a bonfire at 9:30 pm and everyone’s favorite, fabulous fireworks at 10 pm. Come join us as we remember 2018 and look forward to 2019. Fireworks will happen rain, fog or starlight – we’re hoping for starlight.

 Slope Update

Mother Nature continues to throw curve balls and they’re not snowballs. But we have a winning team that plans to put the slopes back together overnight. Stay tuned for the morning slope report. Conditions will be spring-like but we’ll still be skiing and riding.

Morning Report:

Today we bid farewell to 2018. We thank you for making Wintergreen your home away from home - whether for just a day, a weekend escape or an extended vacation. As we head into 2019, we have lots of reasons for you to visit us on the mountain. We wish you all the best for 2019 and hope you include Wintergreen in your plans!

Slope Update

Mother Nature continues to present challenges, but we are still up to the challenge. We were able to groom most of the mountain last night, with the exception of Upper Highlands. The warm temps have had an impact, but we are still skiing on the same slopes as yesterday. Conditions are spring-like and it’s the perfect time to learn to ski or snowboard – or to improve your skills.

The forecast has moved some of the rain out of our area, which is welcome news. Don’t let a few sprinkles dampen your holiday spirit! We’ll help with a Pool Party at The Wintergarden, Bull Riding Championship at Discovery Ridge, a Glow Stick Parade and bonfire. The highlight, of course, will be FIREWORKS. Cheers!

Super Sunday

Update:  12/30, 5pm:

So far Mother Nature has thrown just about everything at us... but the good news is we are still winning.   This weekend we had some amazing spring like skiing and everyone had fun and enough some vitamin D out on the slopes!  Our world class “snow farmers” will come out tonight to put everything back together.  Areas that have gotten a little thin will be addressed with the hidden piles of snow that we have placed throughout the mountain - sorry, we can't tell you where our stashes are.  These piles are kept in reserve so when we have these warm stretches like this we are able to fix the slopes back up for everyone’s enjoyment the next day!

Don’t forget we have fireworks up on the mountain tomorrow night to ring in the New Year plus many other activities for all ages!  Thanks 2018 and we cannot wait to see what 2019 delivers (but we are hoping for snow or, at the least, cold weather!)

Top of the Mornin' to all you skiers and riders raring to get on the slopes today!  Mother Nature still hasn't acknowledged our winter memo and left us with marginal temps overnight which left our Snowmakers hanging.  However, our Groomers smoothed out all surfaces and they are ready to go for the last Sunday of this holiday week.

Don't forget to join us for events and music all weekend long - check out the full schedule in This Week at Wintergreen - live music, silent disco (a must see and do) and more!  There's never a dull moment at Wintergreen Resort - the holiday is on the homestretch so make the most of it!

What a great day!

We are having a great day out on the slopes and will keep it going into the night. The sun was out and the conditions were great. Yes, it was spring skiing, but we are lucky that the snowmakers and groomers have been working so hard to build up the base and keep the snow looking so good through the warm stretches. Enjoy the video below with a few clips from today and make sure you come on up tomorrow as we plan on having just as much fun on the slopes!

We won't have snowmaking temps this evening but it will cool down enough for the snow to set up nicely after the groomers work their magic this evening. The slopes will be in great shape tomorrow. There is also a chance that we may be able to reopen Sunrise. Keep those fingers crossed!

Don't forget to join us tonight at The Edge for some live music with Greg Ward.

A Great Saturday on the Slopes

What a difference a day will make. Today brings sunshine, clear skies, and mild temperatures. Wear layers so you can stay comfortable as the day goes on.

The slopes are holding up in spite of the wild weather. We can thank our snowteam for their hard work to win the battle with the whims of Mother Nature. Overnight the slopes have been groomed and are ready for another day in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. We did lose Sunrise but our elite team of snowmakers will work overnight to put Humpty Dumpty back together for tomorrow. Cross your fingers!

Don't forget to join us for events and music all weekend long - check out the full schedule in This Week at Wintergreen - live music, silent disco (a must see and do), bonfire and more!  There's never a dull moment at Wintergreen Resort - the holiday continues!

Make Today Count!

Update:  12/28, 5:20pm:

The slopes are holding up under all this wild weather mostly because our teams build things to last.  And the good news is snowmaking temps are just around the corner which means we will be back at it again in full force.  Our groomers will be out tonight putting everything back together and priming surfaces for a spectacular Saturday on the slopes.  Sunshine is expected to make an appearance tomorrow with a layer of fog in the valley so get ready for some amazing scenery.  Come spend the day with us up on the mountain!

Don't forget to join us for events and music all weekend long - check out the full schedule here on our Events Calendar - live music, silent disco (a must see and do), bonfire and more!  There's never a dull moment at Wintergreen Resort - let the weekend begin!

It’s going to be an interesting weather day at Wintergreen. There will be milder temperatures with some liquid sunshine tapering off in the afternoon. This will have little impact on our conditions since the Snowmaking Team has built the slopes to weather whatever Mother Nature delivers. We have tons of snow which isn’t going away any time soon. Even with all the crazy weather, we got Highlands open! Remember, we are the only Virginia ski area with two 6-pack high-speed lifts. So whatever the weather, make today count!

Make It A Snow Day!

Update:  12/27, 6pm:  Another great day on the slopes in the books for the 18.19 Winter Season.  We hope you were with us today and making memories to last a lifetime!  Surface conditions will be manicured overnight by our Groomer Fleet and base depth is still solid thanks to our Snowmaking Team!  Word on the street is there will be some under-developed snow tomorrow but rest assured, our slopes can handle it and our crews will be there to greet you with a smile.  Gear up and get out there!

What a great night - we made snow all night long. That means we were able to freshen up the slopes and they're ready for your arrival. Plus  Highlands opened yesterday - that was the best Christmas present. There is plenty of snow depth out there to weather any storm Mother nature throws at us. So bring your smiles and make it a snow day at Wintergreen.

A Little Bit Of Luck

Update - 12/26, 6:30pm

Yaaaaaa-Whhooooo => what an amazing opening day for Highlands!  There were lots smiling happy skiers and riders on the slopes today enjoying the newly opened terrain.  Our Snowmaking Team is prepping for another round this evening.  Stay tuned to see what our amazing crew will accomplish overnight.

Our snow team has been wanting to give all our guests a great Christmas present and they are ready to deliver! Yes, it’s true, Highlands will open today. It might not be first thing, but it will definitely open today.

How did it happen? Yes, there is some luck, but it’s mostly hard work, building the base little by little; not giving up when the weather doesn’t cooperate; making smart decisions and being ready at a moment’s notice to work the system to its fullest. We are proud of our snow team, the expertise they have, and their willingness to go the extra mile even working during the holiday. Thank you!

Now get out and enjoy the new terrain!

Snowmaking - A Good Thing(1)

The goal was to get snowmaking back up before sunrise – and we just made it – temps dropped and the guns are going strong. Today’s focus will be on our current open terrain making it better and better. Plus we will continue working on Highlands – we’re pushing hard to get it opened as soon as possible.

The weather forecast is looking good for the next three days, so keep your fingers crossed! You know we’ll be making the most of any window of opportunity. All we need is some cold temperatures and we can work miracles. SNOWPOWER is a great thing.

Yesterday’s skiing was amazing with new snow on all the open terrain – and it’s only going to get better and better. See you on the slopes.

We're Ready for the Holidays!

Slope Update:

It’s a whirlwind of weather changes, but our mighty team of snowmakers have used their creativity to keep things under control and conditions have been great. During cold periods we put out tons of great snow that has provided a base that will withstand the short periods of temps above normal. We have a 38+ inch base of snow, and it’s not going anywhere fast.

Today is a great day to be on the slopes, blue bird skies, beautiful white snow and lots of smiling faces. Friday is the beginning of our holiday festivities – why not celebrate the season and hit the slopes!

Holiday Fun Starts December 21

We have an expanded holiday schedule with activities for everyone. From Snow Cat rides (the big machines that groom the slopes) to games on the slopes and pictures with Ridgely, there is plenty to do in between run on the slopes. So pack up your ugliest Christmas sweater and your Santa or Mrs. Claus costume and head to Wintergreen for the most magical time of the year. Create some memories!

There are miles of smiles around the resort today and there’s an excitement in the air that can only mean it’s the start of the 18-19 winter season!

We’re opening with our core slopes of Upper and Lower Dobie, Potato Patch, the cross trails, and at 10AM Eagle’s Swoop will open for the season.

Snowmaking Update

The snowmaking team doesn’t quit! They’re expanding the empire and are making snow over in The Highlands, on Sunrise and Tequila, and continuing to build The Plunge. We’re chipping away at getting more and more terrain open before the holidays. The next five days look to be great snowmaking days and with SNOWPOWER, we’ll make the most of every opportunity.

Welcome to winter - see you on the slopes. Smile!

Snowmaking Plans

Our snowmaking plan is to continue making snow on the following areas; Upper Dobie, Lower Dobie, Upper Crosstrail, Lower Crosstrail, Teaching area, and Eagles Swoop.  Plus with any “extra” air/water we have start to put some snow down on Highlands!!

On another snow front, we are looking at a potential snow storm moving in this weekend.  Right now there are forecasts out predicting anywhere from 6-24 inches.  The one thing we do know for certain is that the storm will begin on Sunday and run through Monday morning. So make your plans now for a snowday on Monday and come play in our snow.

The Magic of Snow

We think it’s the most magical time of year. The grass on the slopes is dormant. The temps start to drop. You hear the snowguns come to life and you see snowflakes falling in the night sky. Pretty soon the slopes turn into a beautiful white carpet. Isn’t it amazing how our snow team can take the science of mixing water, air and cold and turn it into something so magical.
