Today on the Mountain

Looking into our crystal weather ball, Tuesday into Wednesday looks promising for a great night of snowmaking. We can’t wait! You know we’ll be ready as soon as conditions permit to get out there and resume snowmaking. Do you remember December 12? There was grass on the slopes and no snow. But on December 14 we opened the 2019-20 season. It’s astounding what our snowmakers can accomplish. We make the most of every window of opportunity and we fight for every flake. But snowmakers are not the only team that make your morning runs great. Our groomers are out every night, sculpting the mountain for your skiing and riding pleasure. Break out your smiles and have some fun on the slopes – any day on the slopes is a good day!

This winter we got a new pizza oven at The Market. No big deal, right? WRONG – it’s a huge deal. We can make hot, toasty, and cheesy pizza faster than ever. Even more exciting is we are offering pizza delivery to those staying in the Mountain Inn. So after a day on the slopes and you just want to chill out in your unit, just call 434-325-8224 and have your pizza delivered!

We have an additional treat this holiday with a Christmas cabaret with our friends from The Sound of Music – A Very Wintergreen Christmas. It’s a holiday spectacular and only four more performances left - reserve your tickets now.

See you on the slopes, in our restaurants, at the Spa, in the pool …

Last Weekend of 2019!

The sun is out this morning, conditions are great, and we are going to have a great last weekend of 2019. Slopes are open from 9a-9p. It is mild on the mountain which will give you the opportunity to shed a few layers and enjoy the great skiing and riding.

Sometimes when it's warm snowsports enthusiast get concerned about the conditions. We have been experiencing great conditions despite the warmth, due to a phenomenon called evaporative cooling. When the snow surface is chilled below the dew point of the surrounding humid air and the surface itself is below freezing, a thin lens is formed on the surface. Lately this has resulted in surprisingly good conditions that tend to be the best in the morning.

Any skier or snowboarder knows that a day on the slopes beats sitting on the couch watching TV. Come on out and take some laps with us and enjoy the last weekend of 2019.

Check out all the events we have going on this weekend and make sure you download our Wintergreen App for all of the latest and greatest everything wintergreen.

Surprising Conditions

Mother Nature is challenging us to see what we’re made of, and she’s finding out how strong and tenacious we are! Yes, it has been warm, but don’t let that fool you - our surface conditions are really good. Overnight the snow recrystallizes making for surprisingly good conditions, especially for first tracks. Our base is strong with a solid sub-surface making good snow for morning carving. Those learning to ski or ride will find the surface supple and smooth.

Snowmaking temps will return in the near future – stay tuned for updates. And wait until you see what Santa left in our stocking -Snowpower just got stronger! Video coming soon.

We’re half way through the Twelve Days of Christmas with lots of fun activities both on and off the slopes. Check it out! And don’t forget to get your tickets for A Very Wintergreen Christmas with our friends from The Sound of Music.

Enjoy the warmer temps, peel off some layers, and bring your smiles. It’s great to be outdoors!

See you on the slopes.

Today at Wintergreen

There are just a few straggling presents left under the tree. The torn wrapping paper has been cleaned up. The empty stockings are hung on the fireplace awaiting next year. Up at the North Pole, Santa is exhausted and sleeping in. Strains of Silent Night are a memory. It’s the day after Christmas and It’s time to hit the slopes! Enjoy a beautiful morning with spring like conditions. Pull out your sunscreen and smile.

Speaking of smiles, it’s ugly Christmas sweater day. Pull out that embarrassing sweater you got last year and wear it with pride. You’ll find a bunch of comrades around the resort – it’s up to you to decide who has the very best ugly sweater.

While you’re on the mountain, take advantage of the extra programming we have available – specialty cocktails at all of our restaurants, live music, on-slope games (we call them reindeer games), and snowcat rides are a few of our favorites. Check out the full schedule for The 12 Days of Christmas.

We have an additional treat this holiday with a Christmas cabaret with our friends from The Sound of Music – A Very Wintergreen Christmas. It’s a holiday spectacular - check the videos and reserve your tickets now.

Bright and Sun Shiny Tomorrow

The sun will shine tomorrow – Tuesday, so make it a great day at Wintergreen!. Yes, the temperatures have warmed up some, but that’s okay for most southerners. You won’t have to wear extra layers to keep warm. Your nose won’t be runny. The snow will be soft and supple – perfect for those who want to learn to ski and ride.

Remember we have plenty of snow to last. We have the best snowmaking system on east coast and conditions can turn around quickly. Forget Christmas in July, we’re celebrating spring skiing in December – come out and enjoy it!

We have a new event for terrain park groupies. For those who like to have an audience, we’re going to bring the park – or at least a portion of it – to the top of Potato Patch by the Blue Ridge Terrace. It will be a jam session where everyone can enjoy watching you perform your tricks. Mark your calendar for December 29th from 1-2 pm.

While you’re on the mountain, take advantage of the extra programming we have available – specialty cocktails at all of our restaurants, live music, Santa on the slopes, Ugly Christmas Sweater day and snowcat rides are a few of our favorites. The Plunge Opens Sunday

The snowmaking team has worked hard to get the Plunge open before Christmas and they met the goal! We hope you all take the Plunge tomorrow and ride the scream machine.

While you’re on the mountain, take advantage of the extra programming we have available – specialty cocktails at all of our restaurants, live music, Santa on the slopes, Ugly Christmas Sweater day and snowcat rides are a few of our favorites. Check out the full schedule for The 12 Days of Christmas.

Remember, we have a hugely powerful snowmaking system and when conditions are prime, it can put out literally tons of beautiful white snow. It’s truly amazing what our snowmaking system can accomplish in a short period of time. Since Wednesday we put out 13 million gallons of water to make snow. That’s a lot of gallons. If you lined up 13 million gallon jugs of milk it would come to 1128 miles  which is like driving to the Everglades in Florida or heading west to get some Kansas City BBQ!

Big News! Eagle's Opens Friday

Our snowmakers had a very productive night - the winds died down and cold temperatures allowed our snowmakers to put snow where they wanted it. The result is we are ready to open Eagle’s Swoop for Friday. Additionally, The Plunge is getting lots of TLC, so it seems that Santa got our wish list. Stay tuned for the announcement of the opening for the 2019-20 tubing season!

Snow, Snow, Snow, and We're Making More!

We’re happiest when the snowguns are running full tilt – and they are! With cold temperatures in place, our team of snowmakers is busy doing what they do best – making snow – and lots of it! Our goal is to have Eagle’s Swoop open on Friday. We’ll continue making snow on Upper Tyro, Tequila and Lower Sunrise. And we’re counting on Santa to bring an extra special present of getting tubing open by Christmas. Hope you all have been good this year!

Great Opening Weekend!

We welcomed skiers and riders to the mountain this past weekend for the opening of the 19-20 winter season. They didn’t let the forecast for precipitation on Saturday stop them and they were rewarded. The rain stopped by 9 AM, the skies cleared by 11AM, and the sun was bright through Sunday. It’s great to have everyone out on the slopes – and it’s only going to get better this week.

Snowmaking temps are back on tonight and it looks like a chance of round the clock snowmaking into the weekend. We’re itching to open more slopes with the goal to get Eagle’s Swoop open for Friday. Of course, we’ll continue to building our base and work on building The Plunge for tubing. Remember SNOWPOWER is awesome and can produce fantastic surface conditions overnight.  Make plans to visit this weekend and enjoy plenty of great snow.

A Very Merry Wintergreen Christmas

But, not only did we open the slopes this weekend, we also celebrated the opening of A Very Wintergreen Christmas with a return visit from the stars of The Sound of Music. The show is an intimate cabaret concert with your favorite holiday songs – Baby, It’s Cold Outside, The 12 Days of Christmas, Santa Baby, Ave Maria, and more. Be sure to get your tickets now! Check out the videos:

The Twelve Days of Christmas

If you’re dreaming of a white Christmas, Wintergreen is your place. Not only will we have tons of winter fun – think skiing, snowboarding and tubing – but we’ve packed the calendar with holiday fun. We’ll have Santa on the slope and Mrs. Claus reading stories and helping to decorate cookies, Monster Snow Cat rides, on slopes games, great dining options, live music, nature workshops with The Nature Foundation, all building up to the grand finale – Fireworks to ring in 2020. Choose your party style and help us remember 2019 and make resolutions for 2020.

Brian Clowdus, director and producer, says, “The Sound of Music at Wintergreen Resort has been a highlight of my career and proved to be the most successful musical I have ever produced! The community embraced us with open arms and where else can you see nuns riding a chairlift on your journey to a show? In response to this overwhelming success we are bringing the stars back together for an intimate indoor Christmas Cabaret where you get to know the actors with personal holiday stories and classic songs in a concert that will warm your heart and tickle your soul! Seating is limited and we expect a sold-out run so grab your seats while they still remain!”

Rod Kessler, General Manager of Wintergreen Resort, says, “The music continues this December and Wintergreen is excited to welcome back the stars of The Sound of Music for a production filled with the excitement and joy of the season. The Resort continues to create broader cultural opportunities for our property owners, Members, and guests and we look forward to working with our talented friends from Brian Clowdus Experiences. We hope to see you on the mountain and the slopes!”

Fall is Here!

See the Blue Ridge Turn to Gold

While every season brings a new twist on the beauty of the Blue Ridge, autumn is the most spectacular. And you can see the Blue Ridge turn to gold playing golf and tennis, exploring on a scenic hike, or watching the sunrise or sunset from an overlook or your deck. If you feel the need to spread your wings, take a trip down the Blue Ridge Parkway, it’s stunning this time of year. Or visit the local orchards, wineries, breweries and cideries and take some of Nelson County home with you.

Halloween – October 25-27
It’s a spooktacular weekend! From roasting peeps (a Wintergreen favorite) and pumpkin hunt to trick or treating and creative crafts for kids, it’s the perfect way to spend a colorful weekend on top of the mountain. Don’t forget the costume contest!

Thanksgiving – November 28-December 1
We start the holiday season by giving thanks – it’s what will get you through the upcoming frenzy of buying presents and packing your schedule with parties and special events. This Thanksgiving, take time to spend time with family and friends, reflect on the good things in your life, and be thankful. To help create lasting memories, we have a full schedule of holiday fun and feasting. Be sure to book your Thanksgiving dinner early, we’d like to save you a place at our table.

Fiery Fridays – A Great Way to Start Your Weekend

Wintergreen Music has a new name and look but they are still bringing the mountain to life with all kinds of music, and you’re sure to find the music you love. Fiery Fridays will start your weekend off on a lighter note with the rhythms and harmonies of bluegrass, Motown and salsa. It’s the perfect way to wind down and relax after a busy week. Join us in the Dunlop Pavilion from 7:30-9 pm. Tickets: $35

July 19: Love Canon

Wintergreen Music is revamping the annual celebration of all things bluegrass. We begin on Friday evening with an exciting show by Charlottesville’s Love Canon – a band that combines the great hits of the 80s and 90s with a mountain music sensibility. Come early for our tasty dining options. Present your Love Canon concert ticket at The Edge and receive a 10% discount on a pre-concert dinner.. Or check out the Prime Rib special at The Copper Mine Bistro (sorry, no discount). Reserve early, it's a sell out - 434-325-8090. Then, stick around for Saturday morning when we pepper the Resort with traditional Appalachian music, fun for the entire family.

July 26: Motown Madness with Masters of Soul

“I heard it through the Grapevine” that Masters of Soul is returning for this Wintergreen tradition. With the band’s silky tones and kickin’ instrumentals, we’ll be “Dancing in the Streets”, or rather on the Mountain.

August 2: Salsa Night with Bio Ritmo

Join us for an energetic evening of Latin groove, performed by Richmond’s popular salsa band Bio Ritmo. These musicians will have your toes tapping with that famous sound of bongos, congas, and yes, more cowbell.

What A Difference 3000 Feet Make!

Temperatures in the Mid-Atlantic will be HOT over the next ten days with highs in triple digits. But not at Wintergreen - it's the magic of a 3000 foot elevation difference. You can escape the sweltering summer heat and come to the mountains where temps are 12-15 degrees cooler - a delightful way to spend a sunny day. Plus we have 10,000 acres of shade! See you on the mountain.

By The Light of the Silvery Moon

For centuries mankind has been fascinated by the moon. We know the moon effect tides, animal and plant life, and human mental state (think lunatic) and bio-rhythms. We even see a human face outlined in the craters and topography of the moon.

Fifty years ago, on July 16, 1969 Apollo 11 launched into outer space on a quest to put man on the moon and better understand this powerful influence in our daily lives. The successful mission included Neil Armstrong’s and Buzz Aldrin’s historic moon walk, spending 21.5 hours on the lunar surface, collecting 47.5 pounds of lunar material and more than eight days in space.  This weekend we pay tribute to these American heroes for their bravery in exploring the new space frontier.

Let’s celebrate the moon! From the Charlottesville Astronomy Club’s viewing the moon through their hi-powered telescopes, to photo ops of kids in space suits, to MoonPies and kids lunar crafts, we pay tribute to this magical moon. Click here for details of the weekend activities.

Tons of Summer Fun

Summer is here and we have tons of fun planned. Check it out!

Discovery Ridge Adventure Center

This summer be sure to stop by the Discovery Ridge Adventure Center. It’s getting a complete facelift with lots of new attractions that your family will love.

  • Gem Mining   Kids of all ages will thrill to discover what pioneer prospectors discovered while mining for gold. We have a sluice set up, so get your hands wet and pan for fossils and gemstones and discover the fun of prospecting.
  • Ninja Warrior Obstacle Course! Channel your inner ninja and test your speed, strength and agility on our new 8 obstacle course.
  • Bouldering Wall  Bouldering is a form of rock climbing performed on rock walls without the use of ropes or harnesses. The goal is to traverse across the wall horizontally, not to scale a tower.
  • E-Mountain Bikes  Stay tuned for when our E-bikes will be ready for guided tours. We plan to have a mountain tour for the more experienced riders and a valley tour for beginners.
  • Mini Golf  We’re adding a ski theme to our miniature golf course. Come check it out. The first 9 holes will be complete for July 4th.
  • The Plunge Summer tubing is getting a new track. It’s 650 feet of thrills and chills in our summertime setting.
  • Archery  Archery will be back online soon and in a new location. Stay tuned for details.

Most of our improvements will be ready for the July 4th celebration. Hope to see you all at Discovery Ridge!

Lake Monocan

We hope all of you have stopped by the Lake to see what judicial pruning and trimming can accomplish. Views have been expanded, the snack shop updated, and our fleet of kayaks has grown adding five new kayaks, two fishing kayaks and a tandem kayak. We also expanded the swimming area a bit for additional room to splash, play games and swim. It’s just not summer without lots of water-time.

Upcoming Events

  • July 4-7 July 4th Jubilee - With fabulous music, axe throwing, block parties, great food and thirst quenching sips and, of course, THE BEST FIREWORKS! Help us celebrate the red, white and blue.
  • July 12-14 By the Light of the Silvery Moon - Pay tribute to Apollo 11’s moon landing just 50 years ago! We plan to celebrate all things moon this weekend.
  • July 19-10 Blue Ridge Mountain Music Fest featuring Love Canon. Thanks, Wintergreen Music!
  • July 29 All About Brew Golf Tournament – benefitting Adipsy. Join the fun!
  • August 2 Salsa! Learn some new dance steps before Bio Ritmo get you dancing in the aisles. Again, thank you Wintergreen Music!
  • Splash Parties  -Throughout the summer join us for luau parties at Lake Monocan and splash parties up at The Wintergarden Pool. Very cool.
  • Movies Under the Stars - Enjoy big screen stars on our big screen. July 6: Star Wars – A New Hope; July 20 Star Wars- The Empire Strikes Back; August 3: The Wizard of Oz; August 17: The Greatest Showman, and August 31: The Sound of Music. Check This Week at Wintergreen for times and locations.
  • August 31-September 2 Summer’s End Festival and Cabin Jam. Farewell to summer!
  • September 5-29 The Sound of Music Don’t miss it! When have you ever arrived at a Broadway musical via a chairlift ride. It’s going to be a unique experience.

See you on the Mountain – and in the Valley!

Wintergreen Joins the NSAA Climate Challenge

All five PGRI resorts have signed on for the industry effort to promote sustainable slopes

When the National Ski Areas Association put out the call for member resorts to join in the NSAA Climate Challenge this year, Wintergreen Resort answered with a resounding, “Yes,” along with the other four ski areas in the Pacific Group Resorts, Inc. portfolio.  NSAA’s Climate Challenge initiative has been around for several years, and more regional destination resorts are starting to be in a position to join industry stalwarts such as Jackson Hole, Deer Valley, and Stratton in the efforts to reduce energy usage and thus carbon emissions.  Geraldine Link, Director of Public Policy at NSAA, exclaimed in her emailed response about Wintergreen and the other PGRI resorts’ involvement, “NSAA is excited to see all these ski areas enter the Climate Challenge.  It is awesome!”

Rod Kessler, General Manager of Wintergreen Resort, noted the resort has already named a steering committee of staffers to develop and implement the eco-friendly programs, and he has named a “sustainability champion,” Director of Golf Operations, Fred Biggers, who would be leading the efforts at the resort.  Kessler also indicated the committee had drafted the initial list of actions to be executed over the next several years to reduce waste and energy usage with the objective of eventually getting to a carbon neutral footprint.

Wintergreen’s spokesperson for the environmental initiative, Betsy Dunkerton, explained it is important to approach the NSAA Climate Challenge as a collaborative effort involving guests as well as resort operations.  “We can reduce idling time for our groomers and buses, and we can buy carbon credits and recycle and compost.  We can even ask our suppliers to reduce the amount of cardboard used when they ship items to us, but those efforts won’t get us all the way to our goal.  As part of our sustainability effort, we will be educating our guests in how they can help by respecting the no idling zones in our drop off areas and making sure they participate in the recycling programs and use refillable water bottles instead of single use plastic containers.  Our pitch to them is pretty simple – we’re all in this together, so let’s all pitch in.”

Being that Wintergreen Resort is the centerpiece of an 11,000 acre environmentally friendly community, it has long advocated for the preservation of the natural landscape.  “We operate in a pristine alpine environment,” concluded Kessler, “and we’d like to help keep it that way for generations of our members and resort guests.  Reducing waste and our carbon footprint is something we all believe in, so we are very pleased to be part of NSAA’s Climate Challenge.”

Memorial Day Reflections

We wish you all a safe and happy Memorial Day. Yes, it is a holiday, but one with greater significance than a day off work, a backyard barbecue, or splashing in the pool. We encourage you to take some time to remember those who have given so much to our country. At 3 pm join with our nation in a moment of silence to honor those who have died in service to our county.

"The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.” — Thomas Jefferson

"Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty." — John F. Kennedy

"Looking across this field, we see the scale of heroism and sacrifice. All who are buried here understood their duty. All stood to protect America. And all carried with them memories of a family that they hoped to keep safe by their sacrifice." — George W. Bush

"We can never truly repay the debt we owe our fallen heroes. But we can remember them, honor their sacrifice, and affirm in our own lives those enduring ideals of justice, equality, and opportunity for which generations of Americans have given that last full measure of devotion." — Barack Obama

Fishing with the Wintergreen Sporting Club

Spring is here and it’s time to fish! The Wintergreen Sporting Club (WSC) has an active group of fisher-folk who enjoy the sport and sharing their stories of the ones that got away. They host a popular, but very informal get together to talk fishing. They usually meet at Wild Wolf Brewery monthly on the first Monday afternoon of the month at 4 pm. If the weather is nice they’ll meet outside in the beer garden, otherwise you'll find them on the inside porch. Join them and you’ll get an insider peek at what’s happening in the fishing world of Stoney Creek – where the fish are biting, what baits have been successful, etc. Everyone is welcome and WSC membership is not required. There is no cost; the only pre-requisite is to love fishing, or want to learn about the sport, and be willing to share your experience and ask questions.

Questions? Email Chris Corish: [email protected]

The Wintergreen Sporting Club is for people who love the outdoors and outdoor sports – archery, boating, shooting, biking and fishing. But there is also a social and service aspect to the group which is expanding. Learn more!

Big news! I finally caught a grass carp!, says Chris Corish. “i had noticed the carp were eating the pellet food the club is feeding on trout pond so i cast a pellet fly on Saturday morning (March 30) to a couple of cruising carp and one actually took it. I guessed the carp was 35-40 lbs. It took me almost 30 minutes to reel in.”

Look for bluebird skies, temps in the mid-40’s and smiles on all our faces.

Be sure to get in your last runs before we bid farewell to the 2018-19 season. It’s been a season to remember and thank you for being part of it!

One More Weekend of Skiing and Riding

Good Morning! We had an over the top weekend with beautiful sunny days and lots of fun on the slopes. The season is winding down and the slopes will be closed midweek. But we have one more weekend of winter fun. Make sure you head to the mountain for your last runs of the 2018-19 season.

The slopes maybe quiet this morning but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do. Have you tried the fastest growing sport in America? Devils Knob Tennis now offers Pickleball, which combines elements of badminton, tennis and ping pong for a fast paced game that is fun and easy for all ages and abilities. Drop in play is available Mondays and Tuesday from 12:30-2 pm. You can reserve a court on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 12:30-2 pm. Indoor tennis is also available for play.

Racquet sports aren’t your thing? Check out golf down at Stoney Creek, hiking on 30 miles of trails, fishing in streams and ponds, swimming at the indoor pool, or bicycle riding. There’s still plenty of outdoor playtime this spring.

Top of the Morning to You!

Wasn’t yesterday a grand day? Beautiful weather, and a great time on the snow. Pond skimming was a chilly success for those who took the challenge to cross the pond. Thanks to all who participated.

Are you wearing your Emerald Isle green?  It’s St. Patrick’s Day! Start your day at The Copper Mine Buffet with an Irish twist. Green pancakes and Lucky Charms! And at The Edge, Chef Cristopher McWhirt has pulled together a tempting selection of Irish pub favorites.

Time is flying by and the 2018-19 winter season is coming to a close. But we planned to end strong and we have enough snow for a bonus weekend March 22-24! The slopes will be closed Monday through Thursday but come back next weekend for your last runs.

Perfect Saturday!

We woke up to a beautiful sunrise and we’re ready to party! Join us in the HUGE terrain park for end of season fun.  The weather will be perfect, highs in the mid-40s and brilliant sun. Roger was out last night pushing and grooming the snow. All his hard work paid off and we have Tequilla and Upper Tyro back for fun on A-side. Thanks, Roger!

Start your day at The Copper Mine Buffet with an Irish twist. Rumor has it there are green pancakes! And in the afternoon go on a scavenger hunt to find the Pop Up Tiki Bar, serving island beverages. And at The Edge, Chef Sullivan has pulled together a tempting selection of Irish pub favorites. We’re going international this weekend!

The highlight of the weekend will be the Slide & Splash Bash on Saturday. Costumes are a must and style is a premium. Are you up for the challenge?
