Pretty Perrrrrrrfect, Again!

Afternoon Update

It’s been another great day at Wintergreen. Lots of you came early and enjoyed the milder temperatures. Wintergreen Will was out and he disagrees with Punxsutawney Phil - he’s seeing six more weeks of winter. So the cold weather isn’t over yet – and that’s a good thing.

Conditions are out of this world right now and the snow isn’t going away anytime soon. We’re starting February strong and will end even stronger!

100% Open = 100% Fun

After a very cold and productive week of snowmaking, our Mountain Ops Crew was able to drop the ropes on those last few trails.  All ski and snowboard terrain is 100% with edge to edge coverage and superb surface conditions!  The extremely cold air temperature this week allowed us to churn out an excellent snow product. Skiers and riders will see the best conditions of the year today -  Enjoy!

Happy Ground Dog Day!  Our hope is that fabled prognosticator sees his shadow so we can keep skiing and riding for as long as possible which was the goal of all the hard core snowmaking happening this week.  We had a few whale sightings on the mountain, in fact, there were pods of whales all over the trails.  That's what we call those large piles of accumulated snow that eventually get pushed out to make our base which helps us weather the weather.

If your legs aren't too tired from skiing 100% of the terrain today, head over to The Edge for live music and dancing from 3-6pm and again from 8-11pm.  Looking for something a little different?  Try our Saturday Night Silent Disco Fever at The Terrace Cafe from 6-8pm.  You really have to see it to believe it!  Boogie-Woogie!

Saturday and Sunday will be sunshiny days with the high in the low 40’s. Today we’ll have everything wide open except Outer Limits. Tomorrow Outer Limits will open bringing us to 100% of our terrain covered in a beautiful white corduroy carpet. Don’t miss the best conditions of the season.

For our Richmond fans, tune in to WRVA for the morning show with John Reid. He’s brought the Reid on the Road show to Wintergreen and is doing a live broadcast from the Terrace Café. If you’re here, stop in and say hi. They’re going to stick around for a bit after the show and will check out tubing this afternoon. Fun on the slopes at Wintergreen!

Weekend fun doesn’t stop when you exit the slopes. Just the opposite – we’ve got Silent Disco Dancing (Wintergreen’s latest craze), family game night, SnowCat rides (an exciting trip around the slopes on the monster grooming machine) and live music at The Edge. If you are looking to wind down, there is The Spa, indoor pool and hot tubs – ahhhhh. Or shift gears altogether and wind your way down the Nelson 151 Trail littered with breweries, cideries and wineries. You can also sample their concoctions in our restaurants as we carry a nice selection of local brews – cheers!

To top it all off, starting tonight, snowmaking is back. We’ll have round the clock opportunities to open the final trails and build our base to make it last.

Morning Report

Acorn Lift Update:

For those who missed last evening's report, the good news is we have a solution in sight for the repair of the Acorn lift. It will take some work to get it back up and running but know that we are working round the clock to accomplish the repair and will move mountains to accomplish it.

Yesterday during the day snowmakers concentrated their efforts on A-side and they did what they do best – make snow, and tons of it. Last night they moved to Central and Highlands for heavy snowmaking and hope to open Devils Elbow and The Gap for the weekend. It’s perfect weather for making tons of snow

Today we will open with 15 trails. It’s going to be a fabulous day on the slopes, mostly sunny, a bit warmer than yesterday, great conditions with a fresh coat of snow from overnight snowmaking.

Snowmakers Delight

Afternoon Report

Acorn Lift Update:

The good news is we have a solution insight, but it will take some time to get the lift back up and running. We anticipate having the motor installed, tested and ready to run by Thursday. Know that we are working round the clock to accomplish the repair and if at all possible, we’ll try get it up and running sooner.

In the meantime, snowmakers are doing what they do best – making snow, and tons of it. They’ve used millions of gallons of water, pumping 8000 gallons a minute. That’s like taking 8000 gallons of milk per minute and turning it into ice cream!

Tomorrow we will open with 15 trails. Not to sound like a broken record, but it’s going to be a fabulous day on the slopes, blue bird skies, great conditions, with a fresh coat of snow from overnight snowmaking. Go, team, go!

Rest up and make it a snowday tomorrow.

Update on Acorn Lift:  The repair to the motor for the Acorn lift is not as simple as we had hoped. We are still working on a few options, but at this time we will not have it repaired for tomorrow’s lineup. We thank you for your patience as we work through this issue.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience to our skiers and riders for this unforeseen circumstance and we thank you for your patience. We will keep everyone informed as we receive information.

All Systems Go!

Evening Update

We are having an amazing day on the slopes and conditions are getting better every second. SNOWPOWER has now been going full force for 24 hours and there's no end in sight. We could be making snow non-stop for the next 4 days! That's a lot of snow! If you haven't heard, there is also the potential for a snowstorm this weekend. Start getting your gear together now and make plans to stay up here Saturday night. What could be better than first tracks in the fresh powder on Sunday morning?

Highlands will open tomorrow!  Tubing operations will resume on Saturday morning and we will let you know when tickets are available for purchase.

Thank you to those who did their snow dances, they're working! That doesn't mean you should stop, keep them going. We can't wait to see what tomorrow looks like after another a full night of relentless SNOWPOWER. Come check it out for yourself, it'll be a bluebuird day and we will be skiing from 9a-9p.

Morning Update

SNOWPOWER has the mountain looking like a snow globe this morning.  The system is going full bore and pushing up to 8,000 gallons of water per minute so you'll see the base depth rise over the next few days.  Highlands and snow tubing return this weekend.  Please be sure to check the blog and snow report often as new terrain opens.

Snow is in the forecast for this weekend and we are keeping an eye on the storm.  The model below shows anywhere from 4" to 12" of accumulation.  Either way, it's going to be a POWDER DAY!

Before the powder arrives, you can test out your freestyle skills in the Slam Jam January Rail Jam on Friday, January 11 from 2pm - 5:30pm.

SNOWPOWER to the Rescue!

Evening Update

After waiting to get it's chance to shine, SNOWPOWER was unleashed today. We had some great snowmaking until mid-morning when we lost temps. Temps returned around 3pm and since then we have been hitting it hard again. It looks like there is the potential for us to run non-stop for the next 5 days at least! That's a lot of snow! If you haven't heard, there is also the potential for a large snowstorm this weekend. Start getting your gear together now and make plans to stay up here Saturday night. What could be better than fresh tracks in the fresh powder on Sunday morning?

Highlands will remain closed tomorrow as we build up the base. No need to worry, Highlands will be open for sure by Saturday with some amazing conditions. Tubing operations will likely resume on Saturday. We will keep you updated as we get closer.

Thank you to those who did their snow dances. It seems to have worked for the time being. That doesn't mean you should stop, keep them going. We can't wait to see what tomorrow looks like after a full night of relentless SNOWPOWER. Come check it out for yourself!

Morning Report

The long awaited temperatures and wet bulb are here and SNOWPOWER is once again in full force - oh how we love the hum of those snow guns!  Our Snowmaking Crew has been chomping at the bit and now they take center-stage for what looks to be a stretch of about 8 days.  We will be making snow around the clock so please be aware there will be snowmaking on open terrain (tip:  grab a new pair of googles or face mask in the new Outdoor Elements ski and snowboard store located in the Mountain Inn). Check out the web cams to see the snow pile up!

One sad bit of news is that Highlands did not make it through the night however, this closure does allow for full snowmaking coverage on this terrain to build it back up bigger, better and faster!

Snowmaking is so much more than flipping a switch!  Now that Mother Nature has finally come to the table, our Snowmakers will be challenged with maximizing water usage during the coldest periods by cutting back gallons per minute used during the day to let the water tank recover then going full bore at night when the temperatures are at the lowest.  At our max, we can push up to 8,000 gallons per minute onto the hill.  That equates to flushing 5,000 toilets or filling 85,334 cans of soda in a minute.

To top it all off, there is a snow storm predicted for the weekend with up to 10" of snow forecast.  Read the full in depth report here.  WINTER IS BACK YA'LL!

Big Surprise Overnight

Evening Update:

Winter Is Back!

The warm weather siege is over. Say goodbye to warm temperatures and welcome the return of winter! The SNOWPOWER monster is pacing, ready to pouch on the first opportunity to start making snow.  Temperatures will drop all night and we should be able to start snowmaking before sunrise. The best news is we have eight days of snowmaking ahead of us, most of it going full throttle and we’re going to push as hard as we can. We’re calling it ‘zero to sixty’ to see how much snow we can get on the slopes in the shortest amount of time.

The plan is to restore our core slopes and then expand the empire. Wait until you see the difference between today and Saturday. It will truly be amazing. Go SNOWPOWER!

Keep your eye out for a possible snowstorm Saturday into Sunday, with accumulation of 1-8 inches. Icing on the cake!

Morning Report:

We said cold weather was welcome to arrive early - and it did! Just as the snowmaking crew was leaving for the day, temperatures dropped and our SNOWPOWER monster was let loose. They were able to pump out beautiful white snow for 5½ hours on all our core slopes. So this morning the slopes are all dressed in white for you.

The story gets better. While last night’s snowmaking was more window dressing, tomorrow will bring a major change. We will be making snow round the clock pushing 8000 gallons of water per minute that will transform the mountain into a winter wonderland. We can’t wait!

For today, temperatures will be mild, but Southerners love the mild temps. Strip off a few layers and enjoy the chairlift ride. It’s going to be a pleasant day, one that will be better for getting some time outside on the slopes.

Beautiful Morning and Highlands is Open!

Afternoon Update

As we look towards Tuesday, we’re not sure what’s going to happen to the slopes overnight. Roger has performed miracle after miracle to keep slopes open and we’re hoping he can pull off another one tonight. Temperatures will be rising to the mid-30s this evening which means there won’t be any snowmaking tonight. Tomorrow may bring a small window of opportunity, but we’ll have to wait and see. Wednesday can’t come soon enough with the full force of SNOWPOWER back online. Stay tuned for the morning report. Tuesday will be partly sunny and mild, so wear layers. If you need to spruce up your wardrobe, check out Outdoor Elements for the latest in winter fashion and gear.

Come on cold weather, you’re welcome to arrive early!

Morning report

The sun is waking up with a dazzling display of color. It’s going to be a great day at Wintergreen with partly sunny with temps in the mid-30s. Last night did not allow for snowmaking, but the groomers were out pushing snow to get them ready for your arrival. We will open with the same line up of slopes. Our amazing grooming team was able to keep Highlands open for today - miracle after miracle!Remember, there is no night skiing/riding on Mondays so the slopes will close at 5 pm. Come early and play all day on the slopes.

Big News!

The big news for the week is the return of SNOWPOWER. The forecast is calling for snowmaking temps starting Wednesday – and it will be round the clock snowmaking! Good thing our snowmakers had a short break. They were able to catch up on life, check equipment, make repairs, work on projects and get ready to flip the switch. This is what they live to do – make snow and TONS of it.

Even more big news. It looks like the polar vortex is on the move and may be sending us some natural snow. It’s too early to confirm, but keep your eye out for Saturday and Sunday. Come early, spend the night and see our slopes fill up with snow. Very cool!

SNOWPOWER INCOMING!

Evening Update

As the sun sets this evening we are looking forward to this cold pattern that is heading our way. It's no secret that the weather has not been ideal for snowmaking, but has led to some great spring skiing recently. Our snow groomers have done an incredible job keeping the slopes together during this period, so that we could enjoy ourselves. If you happen to meet or see a snowgroomer around make sure you thank them.  If you were doing your snow dance for cold temps we thank you, because it looks like it worked! Don't stop now though, keep those dances going!

The temps will dip tonight allowing the snow to set up nicely overnight. Come see us tomorrow for some great skiing and snowboarding from 9a-5p.

Snowmaking Update

We will have a snowmaking crew on standby tonight in case we get the temps. Looking at the forecast there is the potential for round the clock snowmaking Tuesday evening through Sunday. SNOWPOWER will be unleashed and flex its snowmaking muscles in full force. SNOWPOWER at its fullest potential is an amazing thing to see. In no time this place will be a winter wonderland!

At The Ready...

The sun is rising on the same open trails as yesterday - amazingly!  Our groomers were able to hold highlands another night.  Sadly though, tubing operations have been suspended until snowmaking temps return.  And thankfully that is soon.  We have a chance to get the guns on tonight and heavy snowmaking coming this Wednesday! Time to unleash SNOWPOWER and blanket this mountain in white once again!

While you are out enjoying the slopes today, stop by Checkerberry Cabin for some beverage specials and cider from our friends down route 151, Blue Toad HARD Cider Pub. They brew all natural and eminently drinkable hard cider using only locally grown apples from Western New York and, of course, Nelson County Virginia. Located at the bottom of Blue Ridge Express. This is only accessible by ski or snowboard with a valid lift ticket and must be 21 or older to partake. Ski & drink responsibly.

Hanging Tough

Afternoon Update

Where are you? It’s fabulous day on the mountain. The sun is shining – yes, it is the sun. Blue bird skies and 42 degrees. It’s a perfect Saturday.

Due to the warmer temps over the past 10 days (and fog – which eats the snow alive), we’re not sure what will happen overnight. We may have to temporarily close Highlands and tubing until we start making snow in the next couple of days. But you never know – miracles happen.

Are you doing your snowdance? We are! Don’t miss Silent Disco tonight at the Terrace Cafe – 7-9 pm. Crazy fun.

Check out the latest forecast. Looking good!

Amazingly enough conditions are holding. Highlands will have a delayed opening this morning as Roger needs to continue to work his magic before Highlands opens for the day. It’s a big puzzle and he’s out moving snow, grooming and putting the pieces back together.

Clouds are moving and starting to break up. The sun is peeking through and we should have full sun this afternoon. It’s a beautiful sunrise. Come see what fun you can have today on the slopes!

Our Crystal Ball

Looking into next week snowmaking temperatures are returning. Boy, is that good news. Next week we should have periods of round the clock snowmaking and you know we’ll be pounding out the good stuff.

Thanks for your support. We hope you agree that any day on the slopes is a great day!

Another Successful Night

5 PM Update

We can expect some rain overnight but it should end during the night. Tomorrow, if you don’t recognize it, that big yellow ball in the sky is the sun - we’re going to have sunshine! Bring your sunscreen - it will be a great day to be outdoor.

Roger, Doug and Spencer are getting ready to come to work and get the slopes groomed for your arrival tomorrow morning. So get a good night’s sleep and we’ll see you on the slopes.

Keep doing your snowdance, every little bit helps.

Slope Update

Overnight our stellar snowgroomers were able to piece the slopes together and we’ll again open with 10 trails. Give a big shout out to our miracle workers Roger, Doug and Spencer!

Weather forecasts are all over the place but a reliable source is talking about a snowmaking window in the next few days. It’s small window but wouldn’t it be great to put a fresh coat of snow down! SNOWPOWER is chomping at the bit. Today will be cloudy and cooler with an afternoon shower. Make it a great day at Wintergreen!

Even Better Forecast

Don’t Give Up On Winter! It’s been a roller coaster of winter temperatures but the warm spell will soon come to an end. Scientists are seeing signs that global warming patterns for mid-January and February may shift bringing significant changes to our forecast. The polar vortex projections show it’s getting ready to split allowing cold air from the Arctic to flow into Eurasia and North America.  Click here for the full story, but the bottom line is great news for us: great snowmaking temperatures!

Until the weather pattern changes, our snow team is hard at work keeping as much terrain open as possible. We specialize in outdoor fun – rain or shine!

Slope Update

Overnight good news! The rain missed us and our snowfarmers had a successful night.  We’ll take any little break Mother Nature gives us and work it to our advantage. The battle continues and we’re not giving up! We didn’t lose any terrain overnight and we’ll open with 10 slopes. It will be cloudy with temps in the low 40s. Any day you can be on the slopes is a great day.

Wintergreen Adaptive Sports

Wintergreen Adaptive Sports (WAS) is a unique organization that provides outdoor sports and recreational opportunities for persons with disabilities. Part of the Wintergreen extended family since 1996, this great organization helps wounded service members to heal and to discover, or re-discover, lifetime outdoor adventures. The program is offered daily during the winter season with lessons for all ages and all abilities. The program is successful due to the volunteers who instruct, mentor, donate their homes for the Wounded Warrior weekend, and provide extra hands for events. If you’d like to learn more, visit wintergreenadaptivesports.org – where Every Day is An Armed Services Day!

“Our students, who are children and adults with all manner of disabilities, find they can participate and learn. Many become more independent. Our program gives them more confidence. They are reminded–as we all need to be–that there’s a big exciting world out there with a lot of things to try and do.”

Happy Hump Day!

Update:  January 2, 4:45pm:  Everyone may not be aware but we are in harvest season!  Snow Harvest Season!  Our snowfarmers will be out harvesting snow from our hidden corners to deliver another great day of skiing tomorrow.  Remember just because you don’t any snow in your backyard doesn’t mean we don’t have snow in ours!  See you on the slopes and take a snow day!

Mother Nature and Old Man Winter must be planning to show up late to 2019 as these mild temps and wet weather keep hanging around.  This weather pattern has tested the skill and resilience of our Mountain Operations Teams but this crew's grit runs deep.  Our Grooming Team put the puzzle pieces back together again last night through a thick layer of fog (which doesn't play well with snow) and we will open with the same terrain as yesterday.  See the full report here.

While our slopes rely on the weather, there are a few facilities at Wintergreen Resort that are protected from the elements.  The Devils Knob Tennis Complex is one of them!  With 3 Deco-turf II indoor courts, full service Pro Shop and certified instructors, this facility is a world all it's own.  The tennis 'bubble', as it's known, just received a new skin on the exterior and resurfaced courts inside.  A blue backdrop of curtains will line the interior soon to provide better contrast for players.  The Devils Knob Tennis Complex will soon offer a sport that is making a comeback - Pickleball - starting mid January.  We have a staff of certified tennis instructors that offer academies each weekend throughout the year and a new midweek clinic will begin Monday thru Thursday from Noon to 1pm.  Another exciting addition coming Spring 2019 are Tennis & Wine Camps.  How fun does a Swing and Sip Trip sound?!  Stay tuned for more details and in the meantime, call 434-325-8235 for court reservations or tennis lessons.

Good Morning 2019!

5 pm Update

Overheard at Wintergreen

“There are two days in the year when I do something to make me happy – my birthday and New Year’s Day. So I’m here skiing - which makes me happy!”

Slope Update

Tonight our phenomenal snowgroomers will be reshaping the slopes and we’ve got to admit that it’s a challenge. Warm temperatures make it frustrating for our team. We wish we could put a fresh coat of white on the slopes and tubing, but it won’t happen tonight. What will happen is temps will be a bit colder which should let us work on the top of Cliffhanger. Let’s see what sunrise will bring – it should be cooler tomorrow with clouds. There is still plenty of fun to be had on the slopes, so get out and enjoy a day on the slopes – it should make you happy!

Morning Report:

It’s a new year - a fresh start - a clean slate. But what will 2019 bring? Maybe it isn’t what the year will bring to us, but what we’ll bring to the new year. Our Food & Beverage Director challenged us to pick a one word New Year’s resolution. Here are some of our responses: commitment, create, providence, create, honesty, serendipity, responsive, balance, faithful, fortitude, progression, wellness, gratitude, awareness, joy, respect, efficiency, resilience. As we start the new year we hope to use these powerful words to make 2019 at Wintergreen better and better.

We wish you, our friends and family, the very best for 2019 and hope you come and play in our beautiful mountains all year long.

Slope Update

We’re holding our own and we’re opening today with the same slopes as yesterday. Start the new year with what you love best, being on the slopes at Wintergreen!

Farewell 2018

Update: 12/31 4:45 pm

Counting Down to 2019

Gather your friends and family and welcome 2019 in an extra special way this year – on the mountain at Wintergreen. Tonight’s highlights include a Glow Stick Parade at 9 pm, a bonfire at 9:30 pm and everyone’s favorite, fabulous fireworks at 10 pm. Come join us as we remember 2018 and look forward to 2019. Fireworks will happen rain, fog or starlight – we’re hoping for starlight.

 Slope Update

Mother Nature continues to throw curve balls and they’re not snowballs. But we have a winning team that plans to put the slopes back together overnight. Stay tuned for the morning slope report. Conditions will be spring-like but we’ll still be skiing and riding.

Morning Report:

Today we bid farewell to 2018. We thank you for making Wintergreen your home away from home - whether for just a day, a weekend escape or an extended vacation. As we head into 2019, we have lots of reasons for you to visit us on the mountain. We wish you all the best for 2019 and hope you include Wintergreen in your plans!

Slope Update

Mother Nature continues to present challenges, but we are still up to the challenge. We were able to groom most of the mountain last night, with the exception of Upper Highlands. The warm temps have had an impact, but we are still skiing on the same slopes as yesterday. Conditions are spring-like and it’s the perfect time to learn to ski or snowboard – or to improve your skills.

The forecast has moved some of the rain out of our area, which is welcome news. Don’t let a few sprinkles dampen your holiday spirit! We’ll help with a Pool Party at The Wintergarden, Bull Riding Championship at Discovery Ridge, a Glow Stick Parade and bonfire. The highlight, of course, will be FIREWORKS. Cheers!

Super Sunday

Update:  12/30, 5pm:

So far Mother Nature has thrown just about everything at us... but the good news is we are still winning.   This weekend we had some amazing spring like skiing and everyone had fun and enough some vitamin D out on the slopes!  Our world class “snow farmers” will come out tonight to put everything back together.  Areas that have gotten a little thin will be addressed with the hidden piles of snow that we have placed throughout the mountain - sorry, we can't tell you where our stashes are.  These piles are kept in reserve so when we have these warm stretches like this we are able to fix the slopes back up for everyone’s enjoyment the next day!

Don’t forget we have fireworks up on the mountain tomorrow night to ring in the New Year plus many other activities for all ages!  Thanks 2018 and we cannot wait to see what 2019 delivers (but we are hoping for snow or, at the least, cold weather!)

Top of the Mornin' to all you skiers and riders raring to get on the slopes today!  Mother Nature still hasn't acknowledged our winter memo and left us with marginal temps overnight which left our Snowmakers hanging.  However, our Groomers smoothed out all surfaces and they are ready to go for the last Sunday of this holiday week.

Don't forget to join us for events and music all weekend long - check out the full schedule in This Week at Wintergreen - live music, silent disco (a must see and do) and more!  There's never a dull moment at Wintergreen Resort - the holiday is on the homestretch so make the most of it!
