Hiking Trails for Fall Color!

There are over 30 miles of marked hiking trails at Wintergreen. With that much ground to cover, which are the best for viewing fall color? Once again, we went to our nature guru, Josh Palumbo from The Nature Foundation at Wintergreen. Here is his advice and top picks!

Wintergreen is a wonderful venue to optimize your fall color viewing pleasure. When seeking the right trail for great fall color the key is location, location, location. You want trails that have a great diversity of tree species, especially those with vibrant fall foliage. The ideal trail is heavy with maples, black gum, sassafras and hickory. Luckily, Wintergreen has many miles of trails with just those requirements.

Hemlock Springs Trail: This trail, following beside cool, crisp Hemlock Springs, is laden with sugar maple groves which offer some of the best orange and red color fall can offer. As you proceed down this moderate trail, you will see the wonderful reds from the black gum along with the yellow added in from the hickories and yellow poplars.

Upper Shamokin Gorge Trail: This more difficult trail parallels beautiful Stoney Creek which creates a much cooler microclimate perfect for growing a high volume of sugar maple. This trail is also loaded with birch and red maple which provide a good contrast in colors. This trail is a must see for the adventurous color seeker.

Old Appalachian Trail (Cedar Dr – Laurel Springs Dr.): This picturesque portion of trail traverses Wintergreen’s western ridge, which creates a great backdrop for fall colors. Trails with western aspect are usually richer, moister sites. At Wintergreen that means a richer canopy selection. This trail is covered in maple, birch and hickory which make for a lovely color palate. This western ridge is also home to many rock outcrops which offer expansive views of the Shenandoah Valley and therefore a great place to watch color change at landscape level.

Fall Foliage Forecast From The Nature Foundation

Fall foliage is hard to predict, so we've gone to our nature guru for some inside information. Josh Palumbo from The Nature Foundation at Wintergreen has given us the scoop.

Fall Foliage Forecast

This growing season has been a Jekyll and Hyde scenario. Spring was wonderful at Wintergreen; from April-June, the resort received tremendous amounts of precipitation and very moderate temperatures. From July-September we suffered moderate drought conditions. Drought causes stress to trees, and many trees react by ceasing chlorophyll production very early and just dropping their leaves. But, dry weather can also effect fall color positively. Ideal fall color comes from cool nights and calm, sunny days. We have had plenty of those conditions throughout September.

The primary question is what will these opposing factors mean for our fall foliage forecast at Wintergreen?

I believe we are set up for a muted but elongated period of prime colors. Many of the most colorful trees have started dropping their leaves already. On the other hand, a vast majority of trees have been showing a slow change into their fall color “attire." I am guessing we will have a large peak window around October 18-25. That also depends on your definition of peak. Do you prefer the early change when some leaves are colored and others are still green, or do you prefer when most leaves have changed but more leaves may be down? Elevation changes in the area further complicate the topic - later in the season you'll still be able to view vibrant color at lower elevations and in the valley. Whenever you visit, just make sure you get out and enjoy it!

Fall is Calling You!

Do you hear it? The rustle of brightly colored leaves you hear is fall calling you to come to the mountains! There is no better place than Wintergreen Resort and the surrounding area to see the Blue Ridge's annual majestic show of fiery fall color.

Our Favorite Ways to See Fall:

From The Air

For a Saturday thrill, take in the mountain's color from The Zip as you soar 900 feet at speeds approaching 40 mph.
For a more relaxing experience, try a chairlift ride. Come see us October 7-8 during Columbus Day Weekend for a high-flying leaf-peeping experience you won't forget!

From The Green

Devils Knob Golf Course - Virginia's highest golf course covers some spectacular terrain with unsurpassed views.  Guests famously say, "the only thing better than playing Devils Knob in August is playing Devils Knob in October."

From The Trees

Hiking - With over 30 miles of marked trails for you to explore, the possibilities for spectacular fall views is limitless. Stop by The Nature Foundation at Wintergreen for their recommended hikes.

From a Big Comfy Chair, Wearing a Big Soft Robe

Pumpkin Chai Pampering, Autumn Harvest Facial and Wrap, or a Harvest Manicure while you take in fall color?  The Spa is offering fall-inspired treatments to ensure your leaf-peeping experience is as relaxing as possible.

From The Overlooks

Wintergreen is a great jumping off point for a scenic fall drive. Breathtaking fall foliage views abound on the  Blue Ridge Parkway and beyond!

Our Favorite Scenic Fall Drive

Be dazzled by autumn this year and explore the foliage from the top of the mountain to the valley below. Wintergreen is a great jumping off point for scenic fall drives. Be sure to check the Foliage Report to get an idea how fall color is progressing in the Weekly Fall Foliage Report from the Department of Forestry.

Here is this year’s favorite ride:

Blue Ridge Parkway - Nelson 151 Loop

  1. To The Blue Ridge Parkway
Leaving Wintergreen, at the gatehouse, turn right for the Blue Ridge Parkway. Turn right and go north for 13 miles. Along the way, stop off at Raven’s Roost Overlook with a stunning view of the Shenandoah Valley.
    • Insider Tip: The end of September/early October is prime time for seeing hawks and songbirds migrate south.
  2. Continue to Humpback Rock for a Hike
It's a two mile round trip hike to the top of Humpback Rock - the 360 degree view is worth the uphill climb.
    •   Insider tip: this is one of the most popular hikes in the area, so if you like to hike without a crowd, you may want to consider a midweek trip. And for the early riser, a sunrise hike is a stunning way to start your day.
  3. Continue to Route 250
Take Route 250 East toward Charlottesville. As you drive down Rt. 250, turn right on Route 6 and you’ll find Veritas Vineyards and Winery and Afton Mountain Vineyard.
  4. On to Route 151 with Tastings Aplenty
Continue down Route 6 to Route 151 where you’ll have a choice. Turn left and just up the road is Blue Mountain Brewery - the brews are top notch as is the pizza (the Real Deal is our favorite). If you turn right on Route 151 you can wind your way through the Rockfish valley and tour Cardinal Point, Fly Fox and Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery.
  5. Hit The Trail
Need to stretch those legs? Stop off at the Rockfish Valley Loop Trail. Part of the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail, this path offers recreation and interaction with nature and history.
  6. Be Bold
After your hike, just down the road you’ll find Bold Rock Cidery. Enjoy an afternoon on the deck overlooking the farmland while tasting the light and refreshing hard ciders.
  7. Head Back?
You’re almost home! Turn right on Route 664 and if your car needs a rest before heading up the mountain check out Devils Backbone or the Blue Toad, or save them for another day.

Please enjoy this tour responsibly!

    Calling All Stargazers!

Reclining in a convertible, laying back on a blanket in the grass, or just tilting your head to look up from your balcony or patio - there's something magical about the sight of the vast darkness interrupted by brilliant sparkling stars. No matter how much technology advances or how many mobile devices we have, stargazing never ceases to amaze and inspire.

Skywatching is great at Wintergreen year-round because of our elevation and lack of surrounding light pollution, but in the month of August we have some particularly awe-inspiring celestial events coming up!

    Perseids

The annual Perseid meteor shower, known for being among the brightest of meteor showers runs through August 24, but the peak will be this weekend, August 11 and 12. Typically, about 80 meteors an hour can be seen!

How to watch? Get comfortable (your eyes may need to adjust for as much as 30 minutes) and look in the north-east part of the sky. Bring a sweatshirt and enjoy!

    Solar Eclipse

This one you won't even have to stay up late for! On Monday, August 21, 2017, all of North America will be treated to an eclipse of the sun. Some areas in the path of totality will be treated to a total eclipse of the sun as the moon passes between Earth and the sun. At Wintergreen, we will see about an 80% eclipse in the early afternoon.

How to watch? Never look directly at the sun! Facing away from the sun, watch the shadow projected through a pinhole, or make a pinhole box projector.

    Hot Rates

Don't miss these fabulous skywatching events at one of the best places to view them! Be sure to check out Hot Rates when you book. Plus, we have other great ways to stay. From Bed & Breakfast to Golf and Spa packages, or simply a Buy/Get Special Offer which allows you to stay an extra night or two for free. See all our packages and special offers!

There's plenty of summer left, and 10,000 acres (and beyond) of Blue Ridge to explore at Wintergreen! Here are the top eight reasons to visit us in August.

    8) Local Fruit

Right now, Asian pears are available at Saunders Brothers, and if you've never tasted them, they're like a bite of summer, almost a cross between a watermelon and an apple. Not to be outdone, Dickie Brothers has Nectarines and Gala apples, with more fruit ripening all the time.

    7) The Red, White & Brew Trail

With ten wineries, four breweries, one hard apple cidery, and a new distillery, Nelson County offers lots of choices for a memorable tasting tour on the Red, White & Brew Trail.

    6) Events

There's always a reason to celebrate in August! From The Blue Ridge Mountain Music Fest, to the Summer Concert Series at Humpback Rocks Center, Lockn' Festival, and Starry Nights at Veritas Winery, there's always something exciting going on.

    5) ResortBoards

Our newest activity, Resortboards, is serious fun. Surf the mountain - need we say more?

    4) Highest Golf Course in Virginia

    3) Berries & Cream Facial

During the month of August, get 10% off our Berries & Cream Facial at The Spa. Repair the visible signs of aging, plump the skin and return the appearance of elasticity. Your complexion will appear enriched and radiant and your skin will appear healthier.

    2) Water Fun

No Virginia family vacation is complete without some swimming. Choose from our indoor pool, two outdoor pools and Lake Monocan! The lake offers a sandy beach and a wide range of activities both in the water and on the shore. Make sure you try stand up paddle boarding!

    1) Hot Rates

    Feeling hot, hot, hot?

At Wintergreen, we’re not, not, not!

    Here’s how we stay cool:

    1. It’s always cooler at 3800 feet
Wintergreen stays 12 to 15 degrees cooler than Charlottesville and more than 18 degrees lower than experienced on the same day in Richmond, Washington D.C. and Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill. Learn more about Wintergreen Weather.
    2. 10,000 acres of shade – we have lots of trees!
Wintergreen’s cool canopy of deciduous trees helps reduce temperatures and keep you refreshed when the thermometer starts to climb. We’re very shady!
    3. A dip in the pool or the lake
No Virginia family vacation is complete without some swimming! The Aquatics & Fitness Center has an indoor pool open year round and an outdoor pool open Memorial Weekend through Labor Day. Down in the valley, your options include the Stoney Creek Pool or Lake Monocan (open Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day). The lake offers a sandy beach and a wide range of activities both in the water and on the shore.
    4. Enjoy sipping a cool beverage on the deck at Devils Grill following a round of golf or a tennis match
Or stay for lunch or dinner! Devils Grill's elegant contemporary American food features fresh, local, and farm-to-table ingredients. Yum! Check out the menus. Access to Devils Grill is limited to registered Wintergreen Resort guests, Wintergreen Members and guests of Members.
    5. A hike to Paul’s Water Slide or to Shamokin Falls
Two of the most beautiful hikes on the mountain and in the valley also have air-conditioning by nature - waterfalls! Check out Upper Shamokin Falls and Paul's Water Slide.
    6. Watching the sun set over the Blue Ridge
There are nearly endless options to enjoy the sunset, both at the resort and on the Blue Ridge Parkway. One of our favorite options on the parkway is just a few miles up the road, Ravens Roost Overlook.
    7. Listening to beautiful music at the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival
Set among the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, you’ll hear classical, jazz, pop, and Broadway, plus there are cooking classes, seminars, and concerts at neighborhood wineries, cideries, and breweries. Going on now through August 6, this year's theme is “The Fountain of Youth.” Learn more about the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival.
    8. Thrills and chills at Discover Ridge Adventure Center including new ResortBoards

Mountains of Adventure for Ultimate Summer Fun!

Today, June 21, is the Summer Solstice, and the longest day of the year. The word solstice comes from the Latin solstitium, from sol (sun) and stitium (to stop). The sun, as it reaches its northernmost position from the equator, seems to pause, or stop, and create the longest day of the year. It seems appropriate for the sun to take a moment to linger today. Summer is all about taking time to relax, appreciate, and experience.

So, in honor of the first day of summer, we pay tribute to one of our most summery programs: Mountains of Adventure!

For those that choose adventure this summer, and family activities that will please everybody on your crew, the Wintergreen Mountains of Adventure Pass is your ticket to fun. Each pass is loaded with tons of free and discounted activities and adventures:

    • Bungee Trampoline
    • Summer Tubing
    • Climbing Tower
    • The Zip
    • Lake Monocan - swimming, canoe, kayak, aqua cycle, and stand up paddle boards
    • Unlimited Mini Golf
    • Discounted Archery
    • And more!
    • See all activities and details

    How To Stay & Play!

Not only do we have two courses and two completely different designs, but when you book a Stay & Play package, you’ll get a great experience and a great value. Oh and did we mention that Devils Knob is Virginia’s highest course? Well, it is! So if you’ve been looking for the best experience and true mountain golf, look no further.

Vacations should be easy. To make your golf vacation as easy and enjoyable as possible, here’s a sample itinerary full of insider tips:

    Day 1 – Arrival Friday

Stay & Play can last as many days as you want – we recommend Stay 2, Play 2. That way, you can play Stoney Creek on day of arrival or day of departure, and you can spend the entire middle day on the mountain to play Devils Knob.

    On Your Way to Wintergreen
Start your vacation with a tasting tour! There’s wine, beer, and cider tastings along the road to Wintergreen – consider checking out Veritas, Bold Rock, Wild Wolf, Devils Backbone, or others along Nelson 151.

    Check In: 4 pm
When checking in, be sure to look through This Week at Wintergreen for dining options, hours of operation, and events. Make sure your tee times are set up for the next 2 days!

    Relax Before Dinner
Aquatics & Fitness Center - Hang out at the pool, work out in the fitness room, do a few laps, hit the sauna or steam rooms, then relax in the hot tubs.

    Dinner
The Edge – from starters and salads, to hearty sandwiches, bowls and burgers, it's a great way to unwind from a hectic work week. You can even sit at the bar and watch a ballgame on one of the TVs, and if you stay past 9 there might be some live music!

    Don’t Forget To Look Up!
Before you go to sleep, if it’s a clear night, step onto your deck or patio and do some stargazing.

    Day 2 - Saturday

    Breakfast
Fill up at The Copper Mine Bistro to fuel your day!

    Golf Devils Knob
Get excited – you’re about to play Virginia’s highest course! This Ellis Maples designed 18 hole gem is a true mountaintop course with dramatic elevation changes. You’ll find narrow fairways, speedy greens and unsurpassed vistas. Typically 12-18 degrees cooler than surrounding areas, Devils Knob provides Virginia's coolest playing conditions throughout the summer and panoramic mountain foliage backdrop throughout the fall. If you love mountain golf, this is one for your bucket list.

    Lunch
Grab a bite at the snack shop, or go all the way at Devils Grill.

Devils Grill - Overlooking Devils Knob 18th hole, Devils Grill serves elegant contemporary fare in a beautiful club setting. From tasty sandwiches and salads at lunch, to hearty steaks and chops at dinner, Devils Grill uses the freshest and highest quality locally sourced food. Devils Grill is great for lunch or dinner, and the patio also offers an easy-breezy view of the course. And since you’re staying with the resort, you have exclusive access to both the golf course and Devils Grill.

    Afternoon Activities

Spa – After a day on the links, treat yourself to some TLC. The Arnica Sports Massage is geared to soothe tired muscles. Be sure to reserve your appointment before you come to guarantee the time and service that fits your schedule.

Hike – If you still have energy to burn, take a hike on over 30 miles of marked hiking trails and discover the beauty of The Blue Ridge Mountains.

Aquatics & Fitness – nobody would blame you for spending a little more time at the pool! Put your feet up on a chaise lounge and kick back.

    Dinner

The Copper Mine Bistro - From tapas to pizza or luscious entrees. Our favorites are the Seafood Sauté, Lamb Rack or Short Ribs. Or just make a meal of the tapas – the Risotto Cakes are over the top.

    Day 3 – Sunday

    Breakfast
On your way to Stoney Creek Golf Course, stop at The Summit at Devils Backbone and grab a breakfast panini. See their menu.

    Golf Stoney Creek
Upon completion of Stoney Creek, the "Open Doctor" Rees Jones remarked, "I think what Stoney Creek is to me, is one of the great settings in mountain golf." Offering spectacular vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Monocan, Shamokin and Tuckahoe "nines" wind their way through the Rockfish Valley and combine to make this a contemporary design classic. With surprising elevation changes, contoured greens and the occasional side hill lie, Jones brought the natural elements of the landscape into play: meandering streams, hardwood forests and pristine wetlands. A real joy to play!

    Lunch
Stoney Creek Bar & Grill - Our restaurant in the valley sports an amazing veranda with fantastic mountain and golf course views. Choose from satisfying sandwiches like the Turkey BLT, Cheesesteak, or Smoked Ham, Apple and Goat Cheese Wrap. And for guilt free dining, the Chicken Cobb is satisfyingly delicious.

    Before You Go
Spend a little time at Lake Monocan – lounge on the sandy beach or take a stand up paddle board for a spin.

On your way home, stop by Blue Ridge Pig in Nellysford. Bring the area’s best barbecue home for dinner!

    Day 4 – Monday

Call Wintergreen and book your next Wintergreen getaway!

Stay & Play Starting at $99

Stay & Play starts at $99 (per person, per night) and includes accommodations AND a round of golf! It’s tough to find a better deal. But check out all of our Stay & Play packages - we have three versions!

    Make Wintergreen Your Home Base

Wintergreen is centrally located in beautiful Nelson County with endless options for exploring this fascinating area. From the Red, White & Brew Trail, to peach and apple orchards, which we fondly call the Fruit Loop Trail, to Civil War sites and presidential homes, a stay at Wintergreen can combine the best of the resort with local flavor.

    Red, White & Brew Trail

One of the most popular ways to make Wintergreen your home base is to take a tasting tour. Explore the world of wine, microbrews, hard cider and spirits. Nelson County has 20 sipping options making repeat trips a necessity. See more!

Local Orchards on the Fruit Loop

History runs deep in Nelson County and many of the orchards that dot the landscape have roots going back generations. From May to December you have a unique opportunity to taste and tour the best of Nelson County. From peaches and Asian pears to berries and cherries and the best selection of apples, discover your favorite with the Blue Ridge Mountains as your backdrop. See more!

    Presidential Homes

Make Wintergreen the hub for a presidential tour of historic homes, all within a short drive of the resort. Visit Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello and Poplar ForestJames Madison’s MontpelierJames Monroe’s Ashlawn Highland and Woodrow Wilson’s Presidential Library and Museum, and enjoy the beauty of Virginia while learning about these great men and their contributions to our nation.

    Civil War Trail

Much of the Civil War was fought in Virginia and the state of Virginia has compiled five regional programs that tell the interesting stories of the war. So Explore Virginia’s back roads and learn some history while driving and walking through history. You can discover two campaigns that took place close to Wintergreen, The Shenandoah Valley Avenue of Invasion and Lee’s Retreat, The Final Campaigns. Just check out Virginia’s Civil War Trails program for full color maps and details of the campaigns.

    Hiking

Whether you’re looking for a dramatic waterfall, hiking along the Appalachian Trail, or trails made from railroad beds, Nelson County has lots of options to get out and explore this beautiful part of the world. See more!

    Scenic Drives

For those who love a road trip, use Wintergreen as your starting point for some truly spectacular drives.

Parkway North. At the gatehouse turn right and go up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Turn right and go north for 13.5 miles. While on the parkway, feel free to stop at the various overlooks and the views of the Shenandoah Valley on the west. Humpback Rock at milepost 5.8 is a great hike that’s worth the uphill climb for the 360 degree panoramic view from the summit. At the end of the Parkway, turn East on Rt. 250. On your right is the stunningly beautiful Rockfish Valley. Go five miles to Rt. 151 and turn right, going south. Along this drive you’ll find wineries, breweries, cideries and distilleries all waiting to welcome you to taste their products. Turn right on Rt. 664 to wind your way back to Wintergreen.

Parkway South. At the gatehouse turn right and go up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Turn left going south on the Parkway. You’ll go to milepost 27 and turn left on Rt. 56. As you wind your way down, look for Crabtree Falls. You can take the two mile hike to the top of the falls, which is particularly dramatic after a rain storm. As you continue down Rt. 56 stop off at some of the local orchards and sample the fruit in season. Turn left on Rt. 151 and wind through Brent’s Mountain pass. Be sure to stop by Devils Backbone before you turn left on Rt. 664 and head back up the mountain.

    Adventures in Makeup

My normal makeup mission has only two real objectives: camouflage under eye circles and cover blemishes. If I accomplish these objectives I put the day in the “win” column.

But now I am engaged to be married. The wedding is in August at Wintergreen and I really have no idea how to do my makeup, or even how to direct someone to do my makeup for me.

Luckily, The Spa at Wintergreen Came to My Rescue

Yesterday was their Jane Iredale Makeup Launch party, and I got a 30 minute consultation and makeup lesson with the lovely, talented, and patient Valerie.

This is what Valerie had to deal with:

    • My skin: Very pale, very sensitive. My eyes are also allergic to EVERYTHING.
    • My normal makeup: Most of my makeup is free samples from Clinique. I could tell that Valerie died a little inside when I told her this.

    Why Jane Iredale?

There are a million products, right? They all promise miracles. Many leave us disappointed. Why does The Spa at Wintergreen use Jane Iredale Makeup?

    • Certified organic botanicals and top-quality natural ingredients
    • High-performance delivery systems and anti-aging benefits
    • The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends Jane Iredale - all of the SPF products are effective broad spectrum sunscreens
    • On-trend, highly-pigmented shades for every skin tone
    • Free of parabens, talc, phthalates, synthetic fragrance and GMO ingredients
    • Tests conducted for heavy metals, phototoxicity, comedogencity and sensitivity
    • Certified cruelty-free by CCIC (Leaping Bunny)
    • Jane Iredale supports humanitarian, cultural and green initiatives
    • Manufactured in the USA

    The Result

I learned a lot. Valerie took the time to try different shades on me, ask about my wedding, my flowers, and what I wanted to look like. She explained what she was using, how to use it, and had an assistant write everything down for me. This was SO helpful. Now I can come back and buy more products when I am ready, and I will already know which ones will look the best on me. I won’t waste money on something I don’t like. Plus, now we have a game plan for the makeup on my wedding day!

Now that I’ve tried a high quality makeup line, I realize how harsh some of the grocery store makeups can be. My skin is just too sensitive for me to ever enjoy using those products. Jane Iredale makeup was much better for sensitive skin and eyes. It also made me feel like I was doing something good for my skin. Instead of covering up things that I don’t like, I was giving my skin the things it needs to look its best. It was like health food for your face.

So whether you have a special event planned (a wedding?!) or you just want to do something kind for your skin, booking a makeup lesson and/or a facial with Valerie is so helpful, relaxing, and fun!
